Whether as a location for builders of Hoover Dam to escape the heat, a place to see movies with families, friends or a date, or a venue to enjoy ballet performances, the Boulder Theatre has been a favorite local historical landmark for nearly a century.
Saturday night, a large crowd donned their best 1980s attire, which included an abundance of neon-colored clothing as part of the aptly-named Neon Nights. The block party was hosted by Main Street Boulder City and served as a make-up event for their planned New Year’s Eve celebration, which was canceled due to impending weather. Attendees filled the restautants and bars along the steet, while listening to 80s music played by DJ Mike Pacini.
As the old saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
This past weekend, the Boulder City Art Guild hosted its annual Artists in Action show and sale at the Boulder City Parks and Rec gym. While members do not have to live in Boulder City, all participants must be members of the Art Guild. Top, Boulder City artist Barbara Pearce uses a dotting technique to paint images onto rocks. This past Friday evening, a large and appreciative crowd turned out for the Nevada Shakespeare Festival’s performance of “Henry V” in Bicentennial Park. The performance was hosted by Main Street Boulder City and the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce. NSF featured six actors and actresses, who each played six to eight characters during the 80-minute performance.
1 GREEN GLOW: A evening golf tournament to benefit the Boulder City Professional Firefighters Association will be played Saturday at Boulder City Golf Course, 1 Clubhouse Drive. The nine-hole shotgun start tourney will begin at 8 p.m. after a 7 p.m. dinner. Golfers will use LED balls. 1 INTERSTATE INVITATIONAL: Local residents, business owners and those who work in the city can get a firsthand look at Interstate 11 as it nears completion. People are invited to hike or bike along a stretch of the route between 6-10 a.m. Saturday. Parking is at the bridge near the south end of Buchanan Boulevard where the interstate crosses over. 1 THEY’RE SMOKIN’: More than 30 professional and amateur barbecue teams will converge on downtown Boulder City on Friday and Saturday for the Rotary Club of Boulder City’s 14th annual Best Dam Barbecue Challenge. While the teams are preparing their entries, visitors can enjoy barbecue dishes from vendors, shopping and entertainment. Among the highlights are the rib-eating contest pitting Boulder City policemen against firemen, Best Dam Car Show and the KidsQue competition. 1 THEY HAVE HEART: Boulder City residents Jim and Kathy Calhoun will be feted for their dedication and service to Boulder City Hospital when Boulder City Hospital Foundation presents its ninth annual Heart of the Community gala. In honor of their love of cruising, the celebration will have a nautical theme. Students at Boulder City High School will be performing “Shrek the Musical” next week, the first drama production in the new theater.
1 SPRING CELEBRATION: The Spring Jamboree returns for two days of family fun. Bicentennial, Wilbur and North and South Escalante parks will be filled with booths and activities. Highlights include the Little Miss and Little Mister Pageant at 9 a.m. Saturday and Bark in the Park at 11 a.m. Saturday. 1 GRAB YOUR CAPE: Head over to the Boulder City Library for its first superhero comic book fair. Scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the library, 700 Adams Blvd., the free fair will include activities for children of all ages including crafts, story sessions and cosplay. There will be a chance to take pictures with costumed characters, and those attending are encouraged to dress up (but leave your weapons at home). There also will be vendors and a silent auction to benefit Friends of the Boulder City Library.
