In the heart of south-central Utah’s red rock country is Capitol Reef National Park. The park is well-known for slot canyons, natural arches and bridges, waterfalls and the Waterpocket Fold, a huge wrinkle in the earth that extends nearly 100 miles. What most people don’t know is that it also has extensive fruit and nut orchards — the largest such holdings of the National Park Service, and currently ripe for the public’s picking.

With temperatures hitting an extreme of 100 degrees on average in Boulder City during the month of July and what is expected to be most of August, the coaching staffs at Boulder City High School along with their players have all agreed that acclimating themselves to the heat early is their first order of business this month as they get set for organized practices.

Yosemite National Park is one of those places everyone should see at least once in his or her lifetime, and the next two months are ideal times to go. By happy coincidence, it is easiest to go there during the very months when Southern Nevadans most need to escape the heat.
