You know that Progressive Insurance commercial that humorously depicts a “Parent-Life Coach” advising young homeowners on how to avoid turning into their parents? When the coach corrects homeowners to not chime in on strangers’ conversations, it made me realize, I’ve totally become my mother. (But I’m OK with it, because my mom was awesome.)

Actor Tony Todd and I have a lot in common. We were both at Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum on Oct. 6. He was there promoting his latest movie, “Hell Fest” (in theaters now), and I was there watching horror fans pour into the Boulder City-based business to get autographs and selfies with the Broadway-trained actor. Todd, who is known for his many roles in horror films, was raised in Connecticut, which is the other thing the actor and I have in common.
Veterans and their representative organizations are a strong part of Boulder City. Throughout the year there are tributes, memorials, celebrations and gatherings that honor those individuals and their families who wear the various uniforms of the United States. One organization, consisting only of family members of fallen servicemen and women, is identified by a Gold Star.
No issue is ever strictly black and white. Yes or no. For or against. Right or wrong. No matter the situation, there are always various shades of gray and about as many opinions as there are people — and sometimes more than that.
The Declaration of Independence states: “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Powerful stuff.
When you look back on career choices and nonchoices, can you think of a pivotal moment that turned the choice for you? For instance, a dentist might say she was inspired by a dentist who got rid of the pain of her abscessed tooth as a child. My turning point came later in life. Though at the age of 12 I thought I would be either a nuclear physicist, computer scientist or mathematician, in the end I took a college degree in journalism.

Terry Sylvanie, 49, was arrested Dec. 19 and remained in custody at the Clark County Detention Center as of Tuesday, according to online jail records.
Last week, following the arrest of a shooting suspect, the city put out a press release regarding the incident, but the suspect’s name was not released at that time.
There’s no denying that Boulder City’s history is one of the most colorful and rich of any town or city in Nevada.
