What is long-term care?

Long-term care refers to a range of services and support for people who need help with everyday activities over an extended period due to aging, chronic illness, disability, injury, or cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Types of Long-Term Care

Home care: Assistance provided in a person’s home by family members, caregivers, or home health aides.

Assisted living: Housing facilities that provide personal care and support services while allowing some independence.

Nursing homes: Facilities that offer 24-hour medical and personal care.

Adult day care: Supervised daytime programs that provide care and social activities.

Who Needs Long-Term Care?

People of any age can need long-term care, but it is most common among older adults. The need may be temporary or permanent, depending on the person’s condition.

Older adults who have difficulty performing daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, or moving around.

People with chronic illnesses, such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or heart failure.

People with cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of Dementia.

Individuals with physical disabilities that limit their ability to live independently.

People recovering from a serious injury, stroke, or major surgery who need extended assistance.

Children or adults with developmental disabilities that require ongoing support.

Long-term care is not determined by age alone. A person may need it whenever they require ongoing help with activities of daily living, such as:

• Bathing

• Dressing

• Eating

• Using the toilet

• Transferring (getting in and out of bed or a chair)

They may also need help with instrumental activities of daily living, such as:

• Managing medications

• Preparing meals

• Shopping

• Housekeeping

• Managing finances

A common misconception is that long-term care is only for nursing home residents. In reality, many people receive long-term care services in their own homes or in community-based settings.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance helps pay for services that are generally not covered by regular health insurance or Medicare. Policies may help cover costs for home care, assisted living, or nursing home care.
