The seventh annual Heart of the Community Gala raised funds for Boulder City Hospital while honoring longtime volunteers and residents John and Christine Milburn. Early Sunday morning Omar Mateen walked into Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and killed 49 people using a semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. A day later, 2,000 miles away from the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, residents of Boulder City and Las Vegas gathered for a vigil by the duck pond in Veterans’ Memorial Park.

On a hot summer day, Boulder City High School junior Chandler Polley and Garrett Junior High seventh-grader Skylar Szimhardt needed to beat the heat, so they walked to the Boulder City Youth Center.
Snoopy, an 18-month-old pit bull, was going on a cross-country trip from Las Vegas to Texas when tragedy struck. Snoopy’s owners put the dog in the back of a trailer and drove to their destination, but along the way the trailer came unhitched. The trailer tipped over and the owners were unaware they had lost it.
Boulder City High’s two-way star Peyton Koopman will find himself in good company next season, staying home to play for local junior college power College of Southern Nevada with a handful of the state’s premier prospects.
