Season ends with another Eagles’ defeat

The final game of the year was a microcosm of the season.

A dilapidated Eagles team was no match against Virgin Valley, as the Bulldogs rolled Boulder City 70-13.

Virgin Valley (4-5 overall, 2-4 Sunrise) was on a four-game losing streak of its own before ending its season on a bright note against the Eagles.

Similar issues arose for Boulder City (1-8, 0-6), as the team couldn't establish a running game against Virgin Valley.

The Eagles were held to negative yardage on the ground while giving up 277 to the Bulldogs.

Virgin Valley rolled even though every quarterback on the team was out for the game because of an injury. Kai Mitchell, a senior running back, played quarterback. He completed one of two passes for 39 yards but ran four times for 54 yards, scoring two touchdowns in the first five minutes of the game.

Running back Jarrett Tietjen led the Bulldogs in rushing with nine carries for 75 yards and he and Josh Bishop contributed two rushing TDs.

The game was out of hand early, as Virgin Valley led 28-0 after the first quarter and 49-10 at the half.

There was a bit of hope for the Eagles as quarterback Michael Martinelli continued to look improved and comfortable.

Martinelli filled in for senior Austin Wishard for the final two games of the season after Wishard injured his shoulder against Moapa Valley.

Martinelli finished 15-for-25 for 173 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions.

Senior wideout Zac Murphy ended his high school career on a high note, catching 11 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.

With high school playoffs set to begin, it's time for the Eagles to go into rebuild mode. They finish the season winless on the road, and — excluding the win over Quest Preparatory — were outscored on the season 376-78 overall.
