First-year coach Paul Dosch knows that despite the easy wins, his Lady Eagles basketball team still has plenty of hard work ahead.
Not every game will be as easy as 1-2-3. As in three points. That’s all that two opponents could score in four quarters against the Lady Eagles in the Lake Mead Holiday Classic played at Calvary Chapel. Boulder City won five games in the three-day event.
Guards Alyssa Ybarra and Megan Morton each scored 13 points to lead Boulder City to a 63-21 win over Calvary Christian (Calif.) Saturday in the girls’ championship game. Forward Whitney Barlow added 12 points.
The Lady Eagles led 20-10 after one quarter and used a 25-7 second-quarter burst to build a 4517 lead at halftime.
Guard Jana Williams was selected as the tournament’s MVP, while Barlow was chosen All Tournament first team.
“The competition wasn’t as hard as we had hoped, but our girls played very hard,” Dosch said. “We were good on the defensive end. The bench players got a lot of playing time so that was great. We will get our first real test (Friday) against Faith Lutheran.”
The Lady Eagles (5-0) play at 5 p.m. Friday at home against Faith Lutheran.
On Dec. 6, Barlow scored 12 points, and the Eagles jumped to a commanding 36-9 halftime lead en route to a 51-15 win over Las Vegas Calvary Chapel. Williams and Morton each scored 9 points.
Earlier in the day, Boulder City dominated Indian Springs 43-3. Guard Katlyn Daly had 10 points for the Lady Eagles, who outscored Indian Springs 24-0 in the final three quarters.
On Dec. 5, Williams scored 11 points while the Lady Eagles jumped to a 23-0 halftime lead and defeated Bishop Gorman’s junior varsity 44-3. Barlow added 10 points.
Barlow also scored 10 points as Boulder City built a 35-0 halftime lead in a rout of San Diego Calvary Christian, 43-8.
“The teams we played were not very good, but we got a chance to work on our game and get a lot of playing time for the bench, so it did help us,” Barlow said. “But we are looking forward to our regular schedule and the usual league opponents. We think we are going to have a real good season.”
Boys Wrestling
Wrestlers Patrick Garvin and Jackson Dunagan each went 4-0 in individual matches Saturday as Team Boulder finished in second place in the BC Duals.
Garvin was unbeaten at 145 pounds, while Dunagan was impressive at 220 pounds. Alex Pappageorge was 3-0 at 182 pounds. For the season, Dunagan is a team-best 7-0, Pappageorge is 5-0 and Garvin is 6-1.
In round one, Team Boulder defeated Del Sol 55-15. The Eagles then wrestled past Durango 54-24 in the second round before beating Faith Lutheran 43-33 in the third round to advance to the championship match against rival Foothill. Foothill defeated Team Boulder 58-16 to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season in seven dual matches.
Also wrestling well for Team Boulder in the BC Duals were Brady Branscum (106 pounds) who was 3-1. Finishing 2-2 for the event were wrestlers Collin Fox (126), Logan Branscum (132), Dillon Viera (152), Dylan Dennington (160), Thomas Prach (170), Jacob Jurgshat (195) and Jack Rocyski (285). Sam Doane was 1-0 at 182 pounds.
In a dual match Dec. 4, Team Boulder defeated host Desert Oasis 54-21. Branscum and Dunagan each won by pin in 1 minute, 26 seconds to lead the Eagles. Garvin, Viera, Prach (182) and Rozycki also won by pin.
The Eagles also defeated Durango 55-24 and Western 43-42.
In the quad dual several Eagles had winning records: Dunagan and Brady Branscum each were 3-0. Fox, Logan Branscum, Garvin, Viera, Jurgshat, Rocyski and Dennington were 2-1, while Prach was 3-0, Doane was 1-0 and Pappageorge was 2-0.
“The kids did well in the BC Duals and their quad dual. We wrestled hard and corrected some mistakes from our opening meet with Desert Oasis,” coach Jim Cox said. “We are only going to get better because we have great kids that want to get better.”
This will be the final week to register for Team Boulder’s Junior Eagles (sixth to eighth grades). The squad begins wrestling in a youth tournament Saturday at Mojave High.
