Gomez breaks discuss record

For four years, senior Sam Gomez has built a legacy at Boulder City High School.

A defending Division I-A discuss champion, Gomez has provided the Eagles with a generational type talent throughout his years with the program, enduring success throughout every stage of his storied prep career. Now that his tenure with the program is slowly coming to a close, Gomez has ensured that his legacy will live long after his last throw for the Eagles.

Competing in this past weekend’s Division I-laden Liberty Invitational, Gomez broke Chris Wells’ 30-year school record for the longest discuss throw with a 167-foot toss, breaking the 166-9 toss that Wells created back in 1986.

“I know it’s a huge weight lifted off of his shoulders,” Boulder City head coach Joshua Fisher said. “I’m very proud of his accomplishment and can’t wait to change the plaque in our gym. Sam has had his eyes on that goal since he started to love throwing. Now that that goal is accomplished, he can finally move on to bigger throws and trying to win the Division I-A state championships in shot put, while repeating in discuss.”

Finishing second at the Liberty Invitational to only senior Liberty thrower Cyrius Vea, Gomez also finished first this past week in the Eagles’ Sunrise League match against Desert Pines, Mojave and Sunrise Mountain with a throw of 165 feet, beating out Desert Pines senior Samuel Poutasi, who was the closet to the defending champ with a throw of 111-7.

In the shot put, Gomez also finished third at the Liberty Invitational with a throw of 54-5, behind only senior Liberty throwers Nicholas Tapuala and Damian Nunez, while he beat out Poutasi again for first place.

An all-around star for the Eagles in their Sunrise match, senior Nicolas Pfeiffer earned a trio of top five finishes, while placing ninth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.04 seconds. Taking home second place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-7.5, Pfeiffer also took third in the long jump with a leap of 19-5, while placing fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.1 seconds.

In the 100-meter dash, senior Troy Wilborn finished second behind Mojave junior Nicolas Kline with a time of 11.2 seconds, while finishing third in the pole vault with a jump of 10-6.

Finishing 12th individually with a time of 25.5 seconds in the 200-meters was sophomore John Krausman, who helped the Eagles 4x200 relay team (sophomores Devin Reese, Buddy Boggs and Alex Krausman) and their 4x400 relay team (sophomores Buddy Boggs and Alex Krausman and freshman Michael Traasdahl) to a pair of second-place finishes.

In the 400-meter dash, freshman Elias Woodbury and Sebastian Jimenez flashed the bright future of the Eagles’ program, placing 12th and 14th, respectively. Jimenez garnered a pair of ninth-place finishes in the high jump and long jump, while Woodbury earned a 10th-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and a 14th-place finish in the long jump.

For the Lady Eagles, senior Paige Buettner stole the show, with a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 14-4, while placing fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.54 seconds.

Buettner was also part of the 4x200 relay team with senior Bayden Huxford and juniors Jordyn Trobiani and Kenadee Bailey that took first place, while her 4x100 relay team,which consisted of senior Lauren Mullins and juniors Jordyn Trobiani and Kenadee Bailey, placed second.

In the 800-meter and 1600-meter, the duo of sophomore Sierra Selinger and senior Emma Lee Torgeson took first and second in both races, while sophomore Erica Snow took first place in the 3200-meter race.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Mullins took second place with a time of 18.6 seconds and fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.7 seconds. Freshman Geri Wachtel took fourth in the 100-meter with a time of 20.9 and third in the 300-meter with a time of 53.3 seconds.

Rounding out the Lady Eagles’ all-around efforts, Trobiani placed first in the high jump, Huxford placed second in the pole vault and sophomore Nicole Valle placed fourth in the discus event.

The Eagles will resume their season Wednesday at home against Laughlin, Pahrump Valley and Western.
