Boulder City track, softball teams fall short of state titles

The Boulder City track and field teams advanced more than a dozen athletes to the Nevada Track &Field Championships May 23-24 in Carson City, but they could not garner any individual championships.

The boys scored 32 team points to finish seventh in the state behind champion Dayton (100 points), while the girls placed 18th behind champion Faith Lutheran (134 points).

To advance to state tournament, competitors had to finish in the top four places in an event at the May 17 Southern Region championships.

Garrett Meyer finished third in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:35.68. He also was seventh in the 3,200 meters in 10:36.55.

Brooks Roe placed fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 41.06 effort.

Sam Gomez finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 141 feet, 10 inches, ahead of teammates Brendon Cowley who was seventh and Andrew Sands who was eighth.

Sands placed fourth in the shot put with his throw of 47-2, while Jack Rozycki (45-6.75) was fifth. The Eagles’ 4x800 meter relay team placed seventh.

Leading the Lady Eagles was Whitney Barlow, who was fifth in the shot put with her throw of 35 feet and placed eighth in the 300 hurdles.

Alexis Fenyves was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 6.75 inches, while Sariah Gneiting was seventh in the discus with a throw of 90-11.

Softball team finishes fourth

The Boulder City softball team became the third Lady Eagles team this season to advance to the state’s final four only to fall short of its goal of winning the state championship.

The Lady Eagles (25-9) lost their opener in the double-elimination Division I-A softball state tournament to Churchill County, 5-4, on May 22.

They were eliminated a day later in a 6-1 loss to Fernley and placed fourth at the state tournament. The Lady Eagles joined their basketball and volleyball teams as state finalists this school year.

The Lady Eagles were Sunrise League champions and Southern Region runner-up in head coach Angelica Moorhead’s first season.

Against Churchill County, Hannah Frank’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Paige Thorn to lift the Greenwave. Boulder City’s Charlene Masterson struck out four in seven innings and was 4-for-4 with a double. Nikki Schulz added two RBIs.

Against Fernley, Masterson’s first-inning RBI double was all the offense Boulder City could muster. She also pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts for Boulder City, which had a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning.
