The future is bright for Boulder City fall athletics, with three sophomores — Lani Potter (golf), Maggie Roe (volleyball) and Sierra Sellinger (cross country) — earning All-State honors.
Its been a year full of accolades for Boulder City sophomore golfer Lani Potter, adding on to her already well-established trophy case this past week, earning second-team All-State honors for all of Nevada.
Receiving Division I-A Southern Region Player of the Year honors earlier in the winter as well as first-team Division I-A All-Southern Region honors, Potter was just one of three Division I-A golfers to receive All-State honors, joining Faith Lutheran's dynamic duo of Sydney Smith and Morgan Goldstein, who were first- and second-team selections, respectively.
"I'm very excited to see Lani be recognized as an All-State selection," Boulder City coach Andy Schaper said. "There's nothing more I can add on to the already high praise I've given her throughout this season. There are some great golfers in the state of Nevada, so it really speaks volumes to Lani's overall golf game. I am proud of how she has worked and continues to improve each day. The very next day after the state tournament, Lani was at the practice range getting ready for her next tournament. She definitely has what it takes to play at the next level and repeat her success again next season."
Throughout her sensational sophomore season, Potter earned five first-place finishes for the Lady Eagles, guiding Boulder City throughout the Division I-A Sunrise conference and into its first state tournament appearance since 2010. Also claiming a top-three finish in the Lady Eagles' meet with Division I opponents Coronado and Green Valley, Potter capped off her season with a second-place finish in the Division I-A state meet with an overall score of 149.
Earning honorable mention honors for their respected sports were Roe and Sellinger, who were both standouts this fall.
Roe, was one of three Division I-A selections honored, joining Bobbi Tharaldson from Faith Lutheran and Janella Fiso from Virgin Valley.
"It was very nice of them to honor her as an All-State athlete, Boulder City head coach Cherise Hinman said. "There are so many great athletes that could have been recognized for this honor."
While many athletes certainly could have been chosen, Roe was simply in a class of her own this past season for the Lady Eagles, establishing herself as one of the state's top outside hitters regardless of classification.
A Division I-A All-State selection as well, Roe was also acknowledged as one of the country's brightest by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, earning an invitation to its heralded Phenom College Preparatory Program. Concluding her season with a team leading 337 while tallying 259 digs, 92 aces and 41 blocked shots.
For the girls state contending cross country program, Selling was awarded Nevada All-State honorable mention honors, after serving as the Lady Eagles main catalyst this season.
Guiding the Lady Eagles to a third place finish at the Division I-A Southern Region meet and a fifth place finish at the Division I-A State meet, Sellinger's highlight moment of the season came in the Eagles' regional meet, where she finished with a season-best time of 21:22 during her first place finish.
On the season, Sellinger earned a pair of second place finishes and a trio of third place finishes, while finishing 16th during the Eagles' state meet.
"Sierra has been our leader all season," Boulder City head coach Canann Petersen said during the team's closing interview. "She's a tremendous talent and I couldn't be more proud of all her accomplishments. She's worked hard to get to this pointand will continue to do so because I know she wants to be the best runner she can be."
