The Nevada Health Centers brought its mammovan to Vons’ parking lot on Nevada Highway on July 12 to recognize the grocery chain’s $300,000 donation to the mammovan program. When Sandy Stratton Johnson took over the leadership of the Boulder City United Methodist Church last year, one of her biggest challenges was to grow the church.
The end of the high school year was not just a time of celebration for all the new graduates and for those looking forward to the delights of a summer vacation. On June 8 in the high school’s cafeteria, it also was a time to present the annual Eagle Award to Boulder City High School’s most inspirational teacher. The top award recipient receives an Eagle trophy with a U.S. eagle gold coin. The runners-up receive a plaque with a U.S. eagle silver dollar coin. The awards are sponsored by locals David Baker, Jon Barth and Glenn Nakadate. The recipient is chosen from a list submitted by a vote of all the students with accompanying comments.
For the past seven years, The Homestead has hosted a special event during Elder Abuse Awareness Week to educate its residents and the community about elder abuse and what can be done to stop it. Year No. 8 was no different.
Retiring after 23 years of teaching in Boulder City, Marcella Posthuma celebrates her last day of school June 5 with her fourth-grade students. They spent the day in the Tortoise Oasis at Martha P. King Elementary school that Posthuma had developed throughout her time at the school.

Evan Klouse, who will be a senior this year at Boulder City High School, was part of the 2,550 men and women from around the country selected by the U.S. Naval Academy to participate in the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. This program is meant to prepare seniors who are thinking of attending the USNA after they are done with their high school careers.
Graduating Boulder City High senior Chris Carnes received recognition from Mayor Roger Tolber and the City Council May 14 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.
U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Jerrad Timothy O’Brien received his silver wings May 17 for completing specialized pilot training with the 47th Flying Training Wing at Laughlin Air force Base in Del Rio, Texas.
The winners of the 2013 Dan Leach Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, Kevin Tibbs and Jim Holland, with their trophies after the winning match of the 28 team double –elimination tournament. The event raised $1,725 for the Dan Leach Memorial Fund, which provides financial support for local youths, for extracurricular activities. Leach was a Las Vegas corrections officer for 25 years, and was killed when his Metro transport van collided with a semi-truck on Nov. 21, 2009, just north of Searchlight, while transporting prisoners.
