Summer competition too hot for Eagles

As summer heats up, the Boulder City Connie Mack Baseball League 18 and younger summer league team’s competition follows suite.

Boulder City traveled to Eldorado on June 11 and topped the Sundevils, 6-4.

Colin Shepard was 2-for-3 at the plate, with two RBIs, while teammate Kodey Rahr was 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Steve Wagner pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and striking out 11. Austin Shepard closed the game with 16 pitches, allowing one hit and sending one player to first base on walks.

Friday, Boulder City traveled to Summerlin to face Palo Verde High School, where the Eagles lost 14-6.

Jake Hubel, Steven Mull and Austin Shepard pitched, throwing a combined 128 pitches, 71 for strikes and one strikeout. Rahr was 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Mull was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

On Tuesday, Boulder City hosted Spring Valley and lost 13-0.

Wagner and Nick Giunta pitched a combined 121 pitches, including 71 strikes and two strikeouts, allowing 11 hits and walking four.

The loss dropped Boulder City’s record to 2-6.

Boulder City hosted the Las Vegas Toros on Wednesday, but the results were posted too late for publication. On Sunday, the team visits Shadow Ridge High School for a 10 a.m. game.

BCH HEATWAVE

Over the weekend, the Boulder City-Henderson Heatwave hosted the June Age Group Qualifier meet at the outdoor Multigenerational Center Competition Pool in Henderson.

The meet was a last-chance opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the June Age Group Championship meet in Irvine, Calif., scheduled today through Sunday.

Coach Linda Estes said the Heatwave swimmers had great swims overall.

Nick Lara, 16, placed first in the male open 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:07.87 and the male open 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:22.32.

Mason Romantic, 13, placed first in the 13-14 boys 100-meter breaststroke, swimming 1:22.66.

In the girls open 200-meter butterfly, Mandy Gebhart, 16, placed second, dropping 23.56 seconds off her time, with a final time of 2:42.14. She also placed third in the girls open 200-meter breaststroke, with a time of 3:04.33, dropping 26.67 seconds.

Troy Higley, 8, placed first in the boys 7-8 200-meter individual medley with a time of 3:25.40. He also placed first in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:21.86, 50-meter butterfly with a time of 41.97, 50-meter freestyle with a time of 36.25, and 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:30.96.

In the girls 9-10 100-meter freestyle, Tara Higley, 10, placed second with a time of 1:16.11. She also placed second in the 200-meter freestyle, dropping 8.80 seconds to finish with a time of 2:42.60.

Daphne Thompson, 12, placed first in the girls 11-12 50-meter backstroke, swimming 35.82, while teammate Katie Gray, 12, placed second with a time of 38.58.
