Lady Eagles’ batters hot in 11-2 victory

Picking up where Boulder City High’s softball team left off from the March Warm-Up Tournament in Utah over spring break, the bats were certainly cranking Monday in the Lady Eagles dominant 11-2 victory over Sunrise Mountain.

Advancing to 12-3 overall on the season and 2-0 in the Division I-A Sunrise conference, the Lady Eagles, behind the arm and bat of senior Charlie Masterson, were able to gut out a solid win against the Lady Miners despite intense weather conditions.

“We started out kind of slow due to the weather, but I think we got the hang of it toward the end of the game,” Charlie Masterson said. “We came out firing after the fifth inning and that proved to be the difference.”

Following a three-run third inning, the Lady Eagles exploded for eight more during the fifth, sixth and seventh behind the bat of Masterson and sophomore Jerra Hinson.

Masterson batted four-for-five with a run batted in, while Hinson carried the big bat for the Lady Eagles, knocking in four RBIs, on three-of-four hitting with a pair of triples.

“I think she had a really good game,” Masterson said. “It’s nice to see her step up for us and make our lineup that more dangerous. It just goes to show that you can’t pitch around any of us, because our roster is deep with players who can produce runs.”

Driving in runs for the Lady Eagles as well was sophomore Bailey Bennett-Jordan (two-for-four, two RBIs), freshman Marlena Mills (two-for-five, one RBI) and senior Bryanna Lopez (two-for-five, one RBI).

Masterson pitched another gem for Boulder City, throwing a complete game in which she struck out 12 Lady Miners while allowing just two runs.

Following the victory, the Lady Eagles will resume their season Friday with a league game at Virgin Valley.

Boys Golf

The Boulder City High School’s boys golf program won its first league match of the season Tuesday at Wildhorse, beating out Virgin Valley (468) and Moapa Valley (498), with an overall team score of 441.

Leading the way in their Division I-A Sunrise opener was junior Kyler Atkinson, who took first place after shooting a 77 on the par 70 course.

Junior Samu Jancuk also finished within the top five Tuesday to give the Eagles the slight edge over the Bulldogs and Pirates, shooting an 87.

Improving each week consistently, the Eagles placed three more golfers within the Top 10, led by freshman Kevin Phelps, junior Andrew Kovacevich and sophomore Jackson Wright.

Phelps took seventh place with an overall score of 89, while Kovacevich and Wright took eight and ninth, respectively, with scores of 93 and 95.

Starting off conference in solid fashion with a victory, the Eagles look to improve to 2-0 Monday when they travel to Desert Pines for a league match.
