Community Club’s annual appreciation luncheon today

The January meeting of the Boulder City Community Club will be held at 12:30 p.m. today at the Boulder Creek Golf Course, 1501 Veterans Memorial Drive. It will be the club’s annual appreciation luncheon.

Emergency preparedness topic for Retired Public Employees

Members of the Boulder City Chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada will gather for their monthly meeting at 11 a.m. today at The Homestead of Boulder City, 1401 Medical Park Drive.

Guest speaker will be Yuri Graves, emergency management officer for the city of Henderson, who will discuss emergency preparedness.

A no-host lunch at an area restaurant will be held after the meeting.

Therapist to address members of widows’ support group

Anew Women’s Network will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Special speaker for the session will be Merlelynn Harris, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Harris Counseling.

The group is for widows; it meets on the fourth Saturday of each month to provide encouragement, friendship and information.

A free light lunch will be served.

Program about death penalty to be presented Sunday

The Nevada Coalition Against the Death Penalty will present a short program entitled “The Death Penalty: Myths and Facts” at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St. Information about the state’s death penalty and how to support abolishing it will be presented.

The program is hosted by Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship.

Coalition to make plans for weeklong event

Nevada Community Prevention Coalition will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. During the session, plans will be discussed for a weeklong event to spread positive messages throughout the city slated for April 6-10.

Red Mountain Choir to begin rehearsals for spring concert

Red Mountain Choir will hold rehearsals for its spring concert, “Masquerade,” from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday starting Feb. 5. Rehearsals will be held at the Elaine K. Smith Center, 700 Wyoming St.

The choir will perform April 17 and 18.

Anyone 15 and older who enjoys singing is welcome to participate.

Garden club to learn about museum’s hollyhock project

The newly formed Boulder City Garden Club will meet at 6:45 p.m. Feb. 4 at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Guest speaker will be Patty Sullivan of the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum 31ers Educational Outreach. She will discuss their heirloom hollyhock project.

New support group starting for those in grief

The Senior Center of Boulder City is offering a new Surviving Grief support group that will meet from 1-2:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the center, 813 Arizona St.

The group is designed to help those struggling with a loss of any kind. The Rev. Sandy Johnson of Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship is leading the group.

Library schedules variety of activities, events

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

n Movie, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. “The Simpsons Movie” will be shown. Snacks and drinks are permitted and you can bring your own chairs and blankets.

n Teen and adult craft, 6 p.m. Monday in the community room. Participants will make a book page wall art mosaic. For those 12 and older. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required.

n Preschool story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children 3-5 and their caregivers.

n Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months.

n Science Exploration Club, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday in the board room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.

n Recipe exchange: Healthy remakes of comfort food, 2 p.m. Jan. 31. Bring in a small sample to share and copies of your recipe. The staff will make copies of recipes brought to the reference desk before noon Jan. 31. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit required by 8:30 p.m. Jan. 29.

Myriad special events on tap at Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming weeks. These include:

n Ranger program, 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. “Public Lands: Treasures of Southern Nevada” is title of the program. It will focus on public lands that surround the Las Vegas Valley.

n Sunset program, 4 p.m. Saturday at the Boulder Beach amphitheater. Join a park ranger for “Bats: Friends or Foe” to learn about bat myths and how the flying mammals benefit the planet.

The Boulder City Writers Group meets from 7-8:20 p.m. each Thursday in the community room at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Writers of all levels are welcome to attend to learn more about writing and receive feedback on their work.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings

All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 6-8:30 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.

Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Artist/naturalist to help lead trip through Grand Canyon

Boulder City resident and artist/naturalist Sharon Schafer will join University of Nevada, Las Vegas geologist and professor Peg Rees in a weeklong exploratory trip of the Grand Canyon by raft.

The eight-day trip is presented by the university’s continuing education program and facilitated by a National Park Service concessionaire. Traveling about 200 miles, participants will learn about the natural and cultural history, as well as the geologic evolution of the area.

There will be short hikes each day to explore the region’s river, waterfalls and caverns. Nights will be spent camping along the river.

The trip begins with a bus trip to a hotel near Marble Canyon, where participants will spend the night before starting the raft trip. At the end of the journey, the group will travel by helicopter from Whitmore Wash to the canyon’s rim and catch a plane back to Las Vegas.

The course/trip is scheduled July 20-27 and costs $3,295 (double occupancy tent). An $825 deposit will hold a spot until March 10, when the remaining fee is due.

The fee includes round-trip transportation, one-night hotel lodging, all meals and beverages while on the river (except for sodas and alcohol), two-person tents, all camping gear and dry bags.
