BC is great place to live because of its people

Definition: n. someone who volunteers without being forced to. v. to offer or choose to do something without getting paid, to say to someone else that you will do something before asking them if they are willing to do so.

Boulder City definition: Community

How many times have you volunteered your time, efforts, ideas, money supplies, vehicle, etc., to a local organization in the city?

Look around our fine small town and notice the murals, clean statues, beautiful parks, free public events and painted dumpsters. Look at how many people receive rides to the doctor’s office or the grocery store, how many families in need are assisted by groups and churches, how many children get needed dental work, how many children get child care.

These are just a few of the wonderful things in Boulder City.

Yes, some of this is done by city-paid workers, however most of this is done by volunteers.

Nonprofit and city groups are always looking for a few good people. Are you one of them?

Walk around Boulder City at any event and you will see a core group of people always at the center. These volunteers are everywhere. These are our small town groupies.

How many groupies can you name? Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Lend a Hand, Senior Center, Emergency Aid, Artscape, Art in the Park, Community Club, Community Gardens, Friends of the Arts, the museum, Juvenile Conference Committee, Elks Lodge, BC Art Guild, Boulder City High student organizations, Relay for Life, Cancer Center at the hospital and churches. These are all groups that volunteer their services to those in need and help to brighten our community.

There are citizens in the forefront, some in the background and all around you. They are not asking for recognition or monetary award. They do if for you, the community. They love our small town atmosphere, family orientated, safe and sane environment.

How many names can you list off the top of your head? You probably know more groupies than you are aware of.

The point I’m trying to make is that Boulder City is great, not because of Hoover Dam, Lake Mead or some of the other amenities, but because of the people. People like your next-door neighbor or friend.

Shake their hand, pat them on the back, give them a hug and say “thank you.”

When are you going to become a Boulder City Community groupie?

What can you give to your hometown to make it even better?

Christy Springgate-Hill is a longtime resident and community volunteer. She was most recently chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce.

A rad evening in downtown Boulder City

Saturday night, a large crowd donned their best 1980s attire, which included an abundance of neon-colored clothing as part of the aptly-named Neon Nights. The block party was hosted by Main Street Boulder City and served as a make-up event for their planned New Year’s Eve celebration, which was canceled due to impending weather. Attendees filled the restautants and bars along the steet, while listening to 80s music played by DJ Mike Pacini.
