Race for Congress heats up

The race for the U.S. House of Representatives seat for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District is starting to heat up with candidates from both major parties throwing their names into the discussion.

Announcing their intent to succeed Republican incumbent Joe Heck, who has decided to run for the Senate seat of retiring U.S. Democratic Sen. Harry Reid, will be Republican candidates Kerry Bowers, Michele Fiore, Sami Khal, Andrew Matthews, Michael Roberson and Danny Tarkanian; Democratic candidates Barry Michaels, Jacky Rosen, Jesse Sbaih, Alex Singer and Anthony Wernicke; and independent candidates David Goossen and Steven St. John.

Candidates can begin filing to run for the seat in Congress on Monday.

The district occupies the area south of Las Vegas and includes Boulder City, Henderson, Laughlin and most of unincorporated Clark County.

Early voting for the June 14 primary election is slated to begin May 28 and continues through June 10, with the polls opens at City Hall from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 31 and June 1.

Mail or absentee ballots must be requested by 5 p.m. June 7.

Registration to participate in this upcoming June’s election is due by May 14, with extended in-office registration at the Clark County Election Department, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas, and online registration at the Nevada Secretary of State’s website, http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/election/, being held from May 15-24.

Following the primary, the general election involving each party’s selected candidates will be held Nov. 8.

The last day for party candidates to throw their name in the Congressional race is March 18.
