Team Flight has jumped to a 3-1 start and is in first place after two weeks of play in the Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department’s men’s basketball league.
There are four teams in the league this year with each playing a nine-game regular season. Each will play the other three times and the final standings will determine the seeding for the double-elimination, post-season tournament.
Flight returns along with Woodbury Law and Boulder Dam Credit Union. Each team returns most of its roster from a season ago, but also has some new talent. The new squad in town is Jimmy John’s, a team of various players from last year’s seven-team league. The players were able to land themselves a new home and are expected to challenge the others for the top spot.
Defending champion Credit Union finds itself in an early-season hole and is in last place with a 1-3 record. Woodbury Law and Jimmy John’s are each 2-2.
“It promises to be another highly competitive year of basketball,” said Rod Woodbury of Woodbury Law. “This is a very competitive league despite having four teams.”
Two games will be played at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m each Tuesday and Thursday.
Results from the opening weeks are: Flight 71, Jimmy John’s 61; Credit Union 62, Woodbury Law 44; Flight 58, Woodbury Law 47; Jimmy John’s 67, Credit Union 61.
On Jan. 20: Woodbury Law 58, Jimmy John’s 56; Flight 62, Credit Union 59.
On Jan. 22: Jimmy John’s 61, Flight 57; Woodbury Law 47, Credit Union 36.
The league’s leading scorers after two weeks are: 1. Brigham Church (Woodbury Law) 23 points per game average; 2. DeShawn Henderson (Jimmy John’s) 22.3 points per game average; 3. Rob Sandoval (Flight) 15 points per game average; 4. Jonas Hernandez (Credit Union) 13.5 points per game average; and Mike Hernandez (Flight) 12.7 points per game average.
