Relay honors cancer survivors

Cancer survivors in Boulder City are invited to a special survivor celebration during the April 25-26 Relay for Life that supports the American Cancer Society. In addition, the event pays tribute to those who lost their battle with cancer.

Relay for Life is an overnight community event where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue and walk or run around a track “relay” style to fight cancer. Funds raised support cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services in Southern Nevada.

Cancer survivors are invited to celebrate their triumph over cancer by participating in an inspirational survivors’ lap, which opens the Relay for Life. Following their lap, a dinner will be held in their honor. Survivors are invited to bring their caregiver or a guest to join them.

All survivors can preregister for dinner at www.relayforlife.org or by contacting Lisa at 702-237-7926.

In preparation for the Relay for Life, a fundraiser will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Chilly Jilly’z, 1680 Nevada Highway. During the evening event, the restaurant will donate 15 percent of all sales.

This year’s main event will begin at 6 p.m. April 25 at Boulder City High School and conclude at 6 a.m. April 26.

For more information, including how to get involved, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit relayforlife.org.

Christmas dinner open to everyone

When I first became principal of Martha P. King Elementary School, parent involvement through our Parent Advisory Council, or PAC, was small but full of potential. We began with a single president, then grew to include two co-presidents. Today, that growth has flourished into a fully established nine-member executive committee. That evolution tells an important story about our school and the community that surrounds it.

What is a critical access hospital?

According to the Rural Health Information Hub, a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) is a designation given to eligible rural hospitals who meet certain criteria. This designation was created by Congress via the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 due to the closures of over 400 rural hospitals during the 1980s through the early 1990s. The CAH designation was designed to improve health care access to Americans living in rural areas as well as provided financial stability to the facilities that serve these communities.
