St. Andrew Makes Food Drive Delivery

St. Andrew Catholic Community member Frank Dempsey delivers a truck load of food to the Emergency Aid as part of the church’s regular food drive. July’s donation included many jars of peanut butter, which are needed to help nourish the many children that are eating at home during the nonschool months of summer.

Volunteers key to keeping long-term care residents happy

Monday is poker for the residents of the long-term care facility at the Boulder City Hospital. Tuesday is an outing to a Strip hotel, museum or exhibit or perhaps a bit of shopping. Thursday is sing-a-long with volunteers John Mondt and Mary Ann Pyne. Friday is family night, complete with dinner and dancing. Saturday is entertainment from Boulder City resident and pianist Charlie Shaffer.

Teachers Honored as ‘Most Inpirational’

The end of the high school year was not just a time of celebration for all the new graduates and for those looking forward to the delights of a summer vacation. On June 8 in the high school’s cafeteria, it also was a time to present the annual Eagle Award to Boulder City High School’s most inspirational teacher. The top award recipient receives an Eagle trophy with a U.S. eagle gold coin. The runners-up receive a plaque with a U.S. eagle silver dollar coin. The awards are sponsored by locals David Baker, Jon Barth and Glenn Nakadate. The recipient is chosen from a list submitted by a vote of all the students with accompanying comments.

Posthuma Retires After 23 Years

Retiring after 23 years of teaching in Boulder City, Marcella Posthuma celebrates her last day of school June 5 with her fourth-grade students. They spent the day in the Tortoise Oasis at Martha P. King Elementary school that Posthuma had developed throughout her time at the school.

Friends Pamela Donohue, Cheyanne Echler and Jazmyn Lynne Ross have been in Girl Scout Troop 65 since the three were in kindergarten.

Klouse to attend Naval Academy program

Evan Klouse, who will be a senior this year at Boulder City High School, was part of the 2,550 men and women from around the country selected by the U.S. Naval Academy to participate in the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. This program is meant to prepare seniors who are thinking of attending the USNA after they are done with their high school careers.

Carnes earns Eagle Scout rank

Graduating Boulder City High senior Chris Carnes received recognition from Mayor Roger Tolber and the City Council May 14 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.

BC graduate on way to military pilot

U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Jerrad Timothy O’Brien received his silver wings May 17 for completing specialized pilot training with the 47th Flying Training Wing at Laughlin Air force Base in Del Rio, Texas.

Leach Horseshoe Tournament Raises $1,725

The winners of the 2013 Dan Leach Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, Kevin Tibbs and Jim Holland, with their trophies after the winning match of the 28 team double –elimination tournament. The event raised $1,725 for the Dan Leach Memorial Fund, which provides financial support for local youths, for extracurricular activities. Leach was a Las Vegas corrections officer for 25 years, and was killed when his Metro transport van collided with a semi-truck on Nov. 21, 2009, just north of Searchlight, while transporting prisoners.

12 valedictorians highlight academic achievements

Twelve seniors of the class of 2013 will be graduating Wednesday as valedictorians. Ironically, it is the salutatorian, Patrick Vallely, who is a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship.
