Forty years ago this month, I went to a political rally in Chicago at a well-known gathering place called Wozniak’s. Countless Chicago Democrats frequented this bar and restaurant to talk politics and raise a glass or two. If you were a patronage worker or one within the inner circles of the “Daley Machine,” you knew Wozniak’s.

Grace Christian Academy in Boulder City recently held its annual spelling bee. Champions of the school spelling bee are eligible to complete in the Association of Christian Schools International’s Las Vegas District Spelling Bee in Henderson in January.

Boulder City’s Smith honored as pioneer in rural health

Boulder City’s Dr. Warren L. Smith, founder of the Family Doctors of Boulder City, was honored as a pioneer in Nevada rural health several months ago, but wasn’t able to receive his award until Jan. 8. Smith was one of 12 people in the state, and one of only three doctors, honored at Nevada Rural Health Day, according to Jamie T. Anderson, director of rural medical education at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

The City Council voted Tuesday to close the dry lake bed during the July 4 festivities. The dry lake bed will be closed from 6 a.m. July 3 to 6 a.m. July 5.
