Elks Lodge’s annual soccer shoot Tuesday evening

Boulder City Elks Lodge will hold its annual soccer shoot from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Pratt Field at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.

The event is open to boys and girls ages of 8 to 12. Younger children are welcome to try.

The first-, second- and third-place winners in each age group will be presented with medallions. They will be awarded during a dinner at the Elks Lodge for the winners and their families.

Lung Association class to help people quit smoking

The Nevada Community Prevention Coalition’s member organization, the American Lung Association in Nevada, will present the Freedom From Smoking program to help people quit smoking for life at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St. Classes begin Tuesday and will be 2-3:30 p.m. The program will continue through Oct. 14.

Classic car show planned Sept. 6 in downtown park

Boulder City Cruisin’ Association, in conjunction with Tuckers Classic Auto Parts, will present its Fall Classic Custom and Rods show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 6 in Bicentennial Park, 999 Colorado St.

The event, open to all makes and models, will feature a car show, automotive swap meet, vendor marketplace, and live DJ.

Admission is free.

Sewing group to resume weekly sessions Sept. 15

The sewing groups that meets at Hope Church, 850 Avenue B, will start its fall classes Sept. 15. They will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each week on Mondays.

Those who already have sewing projects or equipment are welcome to bring them. If not, the instructors have projects planned. Each session will begin with a short devotional from the book “Life of a Jesus Follower.”

All are welcome; enter at the back of the church. There is no cost to participate.

Republican Women to gather for luncheon Sept. 18

The Boulder City Republican Women’s Club will have its monthly meeting Sept. 18 in the banquet room at the Railroad Pass Casino, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Guest speakers will be judicial candidates on the November ballot.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m.

Dogs invited to participate in Bark for Life fundraiser

Boulder City United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society will sponsor Bark for Life, an event that encourages families to bring their canine companions to walk with them to raise funds to find a cure for cancer.

The walk will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.

A miniature version of the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life, the event will include an opening ceremony, survivors’ lap for canine and human cancer survivors, costume contest for dogs and owner-dog look-alike contest. There also will be music, food booths and information from local animal service providers.

Registration is $20 per dog and includes a Bark for Life bandana and bag filled with canine treats and offers.

Myriad special programs, classes on tap at Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming weeks. These include:

Ranger program, National Park Jeopardy, 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. Test your knowledge about national parks.

Ranger program, Underwater Treasures, 2 p.m. Sunday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. Participants will learn about the underwater resting place of the B-29 Superfortress that crashed in Lake Mead in 1948. Presented by the Lake Mead Institute.

Ranger program, Geology of Lake Mead, 2 p.m. Monday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. Explore the recreation area’s geologic wonders and history of the landscape over millions of years. Presented by the Lake Mead Institute.

Introduction to night photography, Sept. 13. Lake Mead Institute and the Outside Las Vegas Foundation will present the course. Participants must have a single-lens reflex camera with manual settings and a tripod to participate. Water, flashlights and reservations are required.

Writers group meets every Thursday at library

The Boulder City Writers Group meets from 7-8:20 p.m. each Thursday in the community room at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Writers of all levels are welcome to learn more about writing and receive feedback on their work.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings

All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 6-8:30 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.

Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Local churches join for weekday worship

Boulder City United Methodist Church and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church offer a weekly worship called WOW or “Worship on Wednesday.” The 6:45 p.m. worship service is at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 812 Arizona St., and is a combination of contemporary praise music, prayer and a short reflection. The Revs. Sandy Johnson and Jim Lyons lead the service, with music by Francyl Gawryn.

Ordinance promotes cleanliness, accessibility of public places

Individuals camping in public spaces has increased dramatically in the past few years across the nation. On May 27 the city of Boulder City joined the cities of Reno, Las Vegas, Henderson, and Sparks, along with Clark, Washoe, and Nye counties in passing a measure to expand the prohibition on camping in public places within city limits. The new ordinance goes into effect on June 19, 2025.

A relatively small but appreciative crowd turned out Saturday evening for Jazz in the Park, sponsored by the Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department and the Las Vegas Jazz Society. The evening featured the Marlane Coker Quintet and guest at Bicentennial Park.
