Call 211 for valuable community resources

I hope everyone is having a great week. The general public believes our job here is mostly negative but I have found that it is much more positive. Most of our “problems” are simple fixes (with a little common sense), and I continue to marvel at the sparkle of most of my human counterparts.

I’m not sure if you all know about dialing 211 for information about crucial, free or low-cost health and human services in the community. It is a free, confidential resource that connects people with training, employment, food pantries, shelter, assistance for aging parents, addiction prevention programs for teens, affordable housing options and support groups. It provides a one-stop service for community referrals. It sure beats trying to find the Yellow Pages these days or even Google if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for.

Here we go …

March 12. Suspicious: An elderly subject suffering from aging issues thinks someone is trying to break in (several times per week). Elder Protective Services was notified of this situation at 4:50 a.m. in the 800 block of Judi Place.

Destruction of property: A woman reports that her passenger window is broken out. A report and fingerprints were taken at 8:56 a.m. in the 500 block of Fir Street.

Vehicle recovery: A vehicle has been parked in front of a residence for several days. The plates and vehicle don’t match and a vehicle identification number check finds it stolen from Las Vegas at 5:34 p.m. in the 500 block of Seventh Street.

Thought for the day: There comes a time, in some people’s lives, when they are not able to live alone. If you notice strange reports consistently coming from an elderly relative, it might be good to call the local police department.

March 13. See person: A subject is in the lobby to report “nasty” text messages. The person does not want to file a report or obtain a protective order; it was only to let us know at 9:28 a.m. in the 1000 block of Arizona Street.

Burglary: There is a report of a generator stolen at 11:07 a.m. in the 1000 block of Industrial Road.

Civil: The department receives several calls to report threats, stolen money, property, etc. This is a civil issue following a breakup and needs to be taken to the constable’s office at 1:45 p.m. in the 1300 block of Wyoming Street.

Thought for the day: The perfect person sometimes ends up being the perfect nightmare. Do your homework.

March 14. Juvenile disturbance: Kids are outside selling lemonade and one of them has a toy gun. Really? The child was advised to take the toy gun inside the home at 3:26 p.m. in the 700 block of Sandra Drive.

Juvenile disturbance: Four juveniles were seen trying to break into the old hospital. A report was taken and parents notified at 5:42 p.m. in the 700 block of Park Place.

Domestic battery: There is a report of a man and a woman involved in a yelling match. The woman was found with facial cuts and the man fled the scene at 11:23 p.m. in the 800 block of Avenue A.

Thought for the day: If your significant other has resorted to hitting, it’s never going to get better. Get out while you can.

March 15. Foot patrol: An officer investigates a house that has toilet paper wrapped around it. No one answers the door or phone at 1:32 a.m. in the 1600 block of Broadmoor Court.

Officer out with subjects: Adults are standing by as small kids urinate in the roadway. Both adults and kids are counseled on the situation at 3:01 p.m. in the 1600 block of Buchanan Boulevard.

Threats: A caller reports that she is receiving threats via text messaging that “men in suits” are on their way to get her. The woman is no longer upset and says it’s her bedtime and wants everyone to go home at 7:08 p.m. in the 500 block of Hopi Place.

Thought for the day: Wow, some days there’s just too much to comment on.

March 16. Suspicious: An “old-time hit” might be taking place on the Dry Lake Bed. Officers learn the subjects are just taking pictures at 12:09 p.m. in the area of mile marker 50 on U.S. Highway 95.

Panhandling: There is a report of two women selling perfume from the back of their car. They will carry on in Las Vegas at 12:55 p.m. in the 1600 block of Nevada Highway.

Vagrant: There is a report of a subject living in the shed in the rear of an abandoned home. No one is found but officers will check periodically at 1:15 p.m. in the 500 block of New Mexico Street.

Thought for the day: Abandoned properties can be ripe targets for those with no place to live. Keep a sharp eye out if you live near one.

March 17. Disturbance: Officers receive a report of a man who is yelling and throwing things. The man is upset as his girlfriend has taken his phone and a large sum of money and left town to visit family at 7:18 a.m. in the 1000 block of Nevada Way.

Threats: Two parties call separately to report an altercation. One reports threats involving a weapon and the other reports being attacked by a rug. Both subjects are intoxicated and told to stop talking to each other (the rug is exonerated) at 3:26 p.m. in the 1500 block of Foothill Drive.

Accident: There is a report of vehicle versus bicycle. The PlayStation carried by the man on the bike is a reported fatality and there was no damage to the vehicle the bike rider hit at 4:16 p.m. in the 1300 block of Nevada Highway.

Thought for the day: The PlayStation is worth $80 and if the auto driver will just pay, the bike rider will forget all about the accident — good try.

March 18. Family disturbance: A caller reports that her domestic partner must have assaulted her as she has no idea how she ended up on the ground. Witnesses report that drinking and falling are the real answer at 1:06 a.m. in the 600 block of California Avenue.

Theft: Officers receive a report of damage to a trailer and items taken at 10:34 a.m. in the 1500 block of Sunrise Circle.

Suspicious: There is a report of a man throwing rocks at passing cars. The man was warned for the second time on this activity at 12:11 p.m. in the area of mile marker 48 on U.S. Highway 95.

Thought for the day: Drinking and gravity can be a dangerous pair.

Call of the week: A caller reports a pizza delivery person that frequently runs stop signs in the neighborhood. The caller goes to the place of employment and the flippant attitude of the driver gains him a citation issued and signed by the citizen.
