Cruise-in event to benefit Toys for Tots
Boulder City Cruisin’ Association and the 3 Other Guyz will present a pancake breakfast and cruise-in at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Boulder City Elks Lodge, 1217 Nevada Highway.
Participants are asked to bring in an unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more to be donated to Toys for Tots.

Columnist Smith to sign copies of books Saturday
Longtime newspaper columnist and author John L. Smith will sign copies of his two latest books, “Vegas Voices: Conversations with Great Las Vegas Characters” and “Even a Street Dog: Las Vegas Stories,” from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.
“Vegas Voices” highlights interviews Smith has done with some of the people who have made a difference in Southern Nevada including former Sheriff Ralph Lamb, sports betting legend Lem Banker, pioneer educator Bill Evans and lounge diva Ruthie Gillis.
“Even a Street Dog” is a collection of fictional short stories that illustrates Smith’s range of interests.
Born in Henderson in 1960, Smith traces his Nevada roots to 1881. His Nevada Smith column runs in the Boulder City Review and other regional newspapers. Additionally, he writes five columns a week for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The books are part of a boutique publishing project that Smith is developing called NevadaSmith Press.
Republic women to mark holiday, install officers
Boulder City Republican Women’s Club will have its annual Christmas party Dec. 11 at the Railroad Pass, 2800 S. Boulder Highway. New officers also will be installed and there will be a sing-along of holiday music.
Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m.

Church group to present sesquicentennial play
The Women’s Association of Grace Community Church will present a one-act play in celebration of Nevada’s 150th birthday at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10 in the sanctuary of the church, 1150 Wyoming St.
After the play, The Lady in Purple tea will be hosted in the church’s dining room. Women are encourage to dress in purple or Christmas attire. Hats also are suggested.
All interested people are welcome.
VFW to award bike, rocking horse through raffle
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Matthew J. Commons Post 36, will raffle off a new bicycle and solid-wood rocking horse as part of its membership drive.
Post member Arthur Monetti donated the bike, a Next PX 26-inch mountain version with front and rear suspension. The rocking horse was made by post member Mark Westrich.
Tickets can be purchased from members from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday outside of Albertsons, 1008 Nevada Highway.
The drawing will be at the post meeting/Christmas social, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.
The winner does not need to be present and will be notified.
Democratic Club to discuss plans for 2015
The Boulder City Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.
On the evening’s agenda is a discussion of activities in the new year and the Jan. 10 kickoff party. Club members, guests and the public are invited.

Community blood drive scheduled for Dec. 11
The next Boulder City Community and Boulder City Hospital blood drive will be from 1-7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the chapel gymnasium at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 916 Fifth St.
All donors will receive a voucher for a buy one get one free meal from Braddah’s Island Style restaurant.

Methodist church to ring in holidays with bell concert
The Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship will present a handbell concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.
Harmony Handbells, under the direction of Brad Hendricks, will perform traditional and contemporary Christmas songs, and a song celebrating Hanukkah. The group is a community choir of 12 experienced ringers from throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
There is no cost to attend. A goodwill offering will be taken.

See Spot Run sponsors pet food drive for needy
See Spot Run is holding a pet food drive that will benefit Emergency Aid of Boulder City. The food will be given to needy Boulder City residents for their cats and dogs.
Donations of canned or dry dog and cat food, as well kitty litter is needed.
The food drive is scheduled through Dec. 25.
They can be dropped off at See Spot Run’s dog park at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd. Donations should be placed inside a large black trash can inside the gate; they will be picked up each evening.

Additionally, the group is offering 2015 calendars featuring local dogs playing at the dog park. The calendars are being sold for $15 each. Proceeds from sales will help the nonprofit maintain and operate the dog park.
The group also plans to participate in the city’s Santa’s Electric Night Parade Saturday.
Tickets available for annual museum Santa Train
Tickets are now on sale to ride the annual Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, 601 Yucca St.
Train rides with Santa and Mrs. Claus will depart hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, Dec. 13, 14, 20 and 21.
Tickets are $5 per person for anyone older than 1. Advance purchase is recommended as trips usually sell out.
New for this year is an evening Pajama Train, with excursions departing at 5 and 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Dec. 12 and 13. The nighttime trips will include hot chocolate and cookies aboard the train, stories and visits with Santa.
Tickets for the Pajama Train are priced from $14 to $20, with advance purchase recommended.

Lend A Hand raffling airplane, helicopter trips
To raise funds for the services it offers to Boulder City senior citizens and to help the disabled remain independent, Lend A Hand is holding a raffle for three sightseeing tours.
The tours are an airplane tour to the Grand Canyon’s west rim, a nighttime helicopter tour of the Las Vegas Strip, and a helicopter trip to the floor of the Grand Canyon. All tours are for two people.
They have been donated by Scenic Grand Canyon Airlines 5 Star Grand Canyon Helicopter and Serenity Helicopters.
Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in front of the Boulder Dam Credit Union, 530 Avenue G. They also are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Chamber of Commerce, 465 Nevada Way, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at the Lend A Hand office, 400 Utah St.
Winners will be announced at about 5 p.m. Saturday during the Santa’s Electric Night Parade festivities. The winner does not need to be present.

Churches plan special ‘Blue Christmas’ service
Boulder City United Methodist Church and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church are collaborating for a special Blue Christmas service at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 17 at St. Christopher’s, 812 Arizona St.
The service is designed for those who are sad during the holiday season, and will acknowledge that Christmas is not always a joyful and happy time. It also will remember those who have died in the past year.

Emergency Aid to collect donations at credit union
Emergency Aid of Boulder City has been granted permission by Boulder Dam Credit Union to collect donations to support needy residents during the holiday season.
Volunteers are needed to staff the collection station weekdays.
