Officers know, care about local citizens

Thanks for all the positive comments and words of encouragement. If you’re confused with some of the calls coming in to us, you’re not the only one. It would just never occur to me to call the police to ask for help to screw in a light bulb (oh yes, it’s true), or to mediate a child issue over spaghetti. We also get calls telling us how we are not doing our job (they got the ticket); and callers want us to get serious with the “real” criminals (you get the ticket).

I guess the point is this: We are a small town that believes in community policing and customer service. Our officers know and care about the people they serve. I’ve seen more than one of them reach into their own pocket to help someone in need. They often come in with dirty uniforms from assisting with a tire change, brambles in their boots from herding bighorn sheep, or delivering a card to someone who just lost a family pet. We really do live and work in a wonderful place!

Just a reminder: We are getting classes planned for the eagerly anticipated Citizen’s Academy. Expect to hear something in the next four to six weeks for a fall class. Each student is carefully screened and background checked prior to acceptance in the program.

I predict that, like the majority of our previous graduates, you will finish with a fresh outlook on law enforcement, be a more effective witness, diligent parent, prepared homeowner, and overall advocate for the forces of good in our town.

Now, let’s see what’s been going on.

Jan. 1. DUI: There’s a report of an impaired driver in a silver Jaguar. The subject was given some “down time” at the Henderson City Jail to figure out how his route to North Las Vegas led him to Boulder City at 7:15 a.m. in the 800 block of Nevada Way.

DUI: A report came in that an elderly driver was all over the road coming into town. The subject was transported to Boulder City Hospital because of a medical episode at 11:36 a.m. in the 1600 block of Nevada Highway.

Drunk: There was a report of an intoxicated juvenile. A portable breath test was administered and appropriate actions were taken at 10:28 p.m. in the 900 block of Adams Boulevard.

Theme for the day: There are many reasons why people may be driving less than perfect. Calling an officer just might be the best result that could happen.

Jan. 2. Missing person: A concerned parent called after an adult child moved and couldn’t be contacted at 8:35 a.m. in the 600 block of Florence Drive. Adults are allowed to decide when and if to contact their parents; have the local police department do a welfare check if you remain uneasy.

DUI: The reporting party was following a vehicle that was all over the road. The elderly male was not feeling well and is having a family member come pick him up at 2:50 p.m. in the 500 block of Nevada Way.

Suspicious: The caller is concerned about a man found inspecting the house’s paint in the backyard at 6:40 p.m. in the 1400 block of Pueblo Drive. The male was advised to leave and the caller was advised to call right away if he returns.

Theme for the day: Remember JDLR (just doesn’t look right). Call if the story and the circumstances just don’t match.

Jan. 3. Reckless: A group of reckless motorcyclists, now stopped at the gas station, was not seen doing anything reckless at 10:54 a.m. in the 1600 block of Nevada Highway.

Damage: A vehicle’s mirror was broken when it was parked. It seems adhesive holding the mirror dried up and the mirror fell off at 2:55 p.m. in the 600 block of Avenue B.

Accident: A rollover accident without injuries was reported. The vehicle was towed and the owner cited for several infractions at 6:27 p.m. in the area of U.S. Highway 93 and U.S. Highway 95.

Theme for the day: Every time you feel like not putting on your seat belt, remember that at 6:27 p.m. today there was someone who was glad he did.

Jan. 4. Burglary: A report came in that someone kicked in the front door at 12:50 a.m. in the 1500 block of Nevada Highway.

Water: Gushing water in the street from a water line was reported. The water department was contacted at 9:46 a.m. in the 1300 block of Georgia Avenue.

Suspicious: A man was seen in a sleeping bag at a local business. The subject said he was eagerly awaiting his repair parts at 11:45 p.m. in the 700 block of Canyon Road.

Theme for the day: Isn’t it just your luck to need a bath when all the water is shut off for repairs.

Jan. 5. Traffic hazard: Items are reported scattered all over the road at mile marker 49 on U.S. Highway 95 at 9:16 a.m. The items were picked up.

DUI: A traffic stop turns into a really bad day for someone. The subject will be spending the night in jail at 2:31 p.m. in the area of Avenue K and Adams Boulevard.

DUI: A subject who had been slurring words was reported getting into a vehicle. The subject becomes a new roommate for our previous DUI at 9:59 p.m. in the 1200 block of Nevada Highway.

Theme for the day: It’s better to wait till you get home before you argue about how much money you lost on your vacation. She just might throw your clothes out the car window.

Jan. 6. Drugs: Marijuana was taken from an elderly subject and the caller wants officers to come pick it up. Traditional medicine practiced here at 10:12 a.m. in the 900 block of Adams Boulevard.

Suspicious: There is a report of a person lying alongside the road in the rocks. The subject just taking a rest at 11:36 a.m. in the area of mile marker 51 on U.S. Highway 95.

Suspicious vehicle: A running vehicle was parked in front of this location for an hour with someone inside. The subject said he decided to wait somewhere else for his girlfriend at 9:03 p.m. in the 1600 block of Carse Drive.

Theme for the day: Marijuana is not legal here (yet). It’s better to leave the herbal remedies at home.

Jan. 7. Petty theft: The reporting party has found his elk antlers are missing at 9:31 a.m. in the 600 block of Arrayo Way.

Assist: A request for assistance to screw in a light bulb is made. It was determined to be an electrical issue not bulb problem at 9:49 a.m. in the 800 block of Avenue A.

Family disturbance: A man and a woman each want the other one to leave. Both parties are too intoxicated to leave and will sleep in separate rooms for the night at 8:26 p.m. in the 600 block of Avenue M.

Theme for the day: It’s best to teach your elk to keep track of its antlers.

Call of the week: The traffic stop finds an unlicensed female driver en route to her “date.” Her “John” arrives to vouch for her. The female goes to jail. The male goes home alone. Jan. 2 at 11:16 p.m. in the 900 block of Vista Lago Way.

Have a great week.
