Workers at veterans home suspended for drinking in parking lot

Two employees at the Nevada State Veterans Home were suspended after they were seen drinking in the parking lot.

The two were cited for public intoxication about 12:45 a.m. Aug. 2, according to Boulder City police.

The veterans home did not release the names of the employees. It was unknown if they were on shift at the time of the citation.

A housekeeping staff member saw three employees in the parking lot drinking what appeared to be beer, according to Kat Miller, director of the Nevada Department of Veteran Services. That employee notified the nurse manager who called police, Miller said.

Only two of the three employees were cited for public intoxication. They were not employed by the state, but were contracted by Healthcare Services Group Inc. Miller described them as “back of the house” employees who don’t have direct contact with patients.

Both employees were immediately suspended.

Most employees working at the veterans home are contracted by an outside employer, including a majority of the housekeeping staff and food-service employees, according to Miller.

“This is the first time we’ve ever had a problem with contracted employees doing anything like this,” she said.
