Meetings will help explain Affordable Care Act

Boulder City Library and CARE NV will host meetings at the library, 701 Adams Blvd., to assist residents with understanding and signing up for health care under the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare. The meetings will be Feb. 14 and March 14. The visits are scheduled by appointment; call 702-836-9033 to make an appointment.

Ceramic artist to speak at hotel gallery tonight

Boulder City Art Guild and Gallery will host guest artist Lynda Whitehair at its 6:30 meeting tonight.

Whitehair will speak about her ceramics, the creative process, challenges she has encountered and her achievements. A question and answer session will follow her presentation.

Refreshments will be served. The meeting will be held at the gallery at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Sunday musical event to benefit area charities

A musical celebration, the Boulder City Circle Show, will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1319 San Felipe Drive.

The concert will feature songs performed by Phil Marcus Esser, Charlie Shaffer, Arno Marsh, Bob Baker, Bruce Harper, Greg Langley, Nancy Porter, Paul Klouse, Francyl Gawryn, Terri Cola, Susan Slykerman, Lois Foree and drummer Sandy Nelson.

Proceeds will benefit Emergency Aid of Boulder City and Lend A Hand.

Dodgeball tourney to benefit Eagles softball team

Boulder City High School’s Eagles softball team is sponsoring a dodgeball tournament Jan. 11. The tourney will begin at 2 p.m. in the gym at the school, 1101 Fifth St.

Play will feature five-person teams. Participation is open to anyone in high school or older; you do not have to be a student to play. There is a $50 fee per team if registered by Wednesday. Late registration is $75. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the softball team.

Democratic club to meet, host annual potluck

The Boulder City Democratic Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Lynn Lanier, climate reality leader for Southern Nevada, will be the guest speaker.

Lanier, a retired chemical engineer, has been trained by former Vice President Al Gore and his team to present an undated version of their climate reality slide presentation. He is the father of Lee Lanier, who co-founded the Boulder City Dam Short Film Festival. All interested people are invited to attend.

Additionally, the club will hold its annual potluck from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 11 at the multiuse building, 1204 Sixth St. Guests and nonmembers are welcome. The theme of the celebration is Green Light to Midterm Victories in 2014.

Those attending are asked to bring hors d’oeuvres, a salad or a hot dish to share. The club will provide dessert, ice, water, coffee, tea and soft drinks.

There will be a drawing and door prizes. Food items or monetary donations to Emergency Aid of Boulder City are welcome.

Lowden to address Republican women’s club

Boulder City Republican Women will meet at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 16 in the conference room at Railroad Pass Casino, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Guest speaker will be Sue Lowden, a candidate for lieutenant governor. Lowden is a businesswoman, former state senator and television news anchor.

Library to host monthly craft time, sets events

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for January. These include:

n Preschool storytime: 10-10:30 a.m. Wednesday and Jan. 15, 22 and 29 in the board room for children 3-5.

n Toddler storytime: 10:30-11 a.m. Wednesday and Jan. 15, 22 and 29 in the board room for children younger than 36 months.

n Family storytime: 6-7 p.m. in the community room. The event also will include science, crafts, games and Legos.

n Magic Tree House book club: 3:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the board room. “Dingoes at Dinnertime” will be featured for children ages 6-11.

n Movie of the month: 1-3 p.m. Jan. 25. “Jurassic Park” will be shown.

n Lego Challenge: 4-5 -.m. Jan. 30 in the community room for children 6

Additionally, an open craft time has been scheduled for the first Saturday of the month through April. The sessions are open to crafters of all ages and are intended to encourage socializing. People are welcome to bring in whatever project they are working on, as well as food and beverages.

Rehearsals begin Jan. 9 for Red Mountain Choir

Rehearsals for Red Mountain Choir’s spring concert will begin Jan. 9 and continue from 7-9 p.m. Thursdays at the Elaine K. Smith Center, 799 Wyoming St.

The concert will be presented March 28-29. This is a nonauditioned choir for all who enjoy singing. For additional information or to join the choir, call Rose at 702-293-5455.

Support group helps people with breathing problems

Area residents are invited to attend the Friends and Family of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease support group.

The group meets at 10 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 823 Arizona St.

Bruce Borchard of Vital Care leads the group, which explores ways for better living with COPD, asthma and emphysema. It is sanctioned by the Better Breathers and American Lung Association.
