American Legion's monthly meeting to be held Tuesday

American Legion, Post 31, will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the hall, 508 California Ave. All veterans are welcome to attend.


Soil scientist to address garden club members

Members of the Boulder City Garden Club will learn about local soil when they meet at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Guest speaker for the session, Douglas Merkler, will present "The Dirt on Dirt: Things You Need to Know About Soil and Why Our Life Depends on It." All interested people are welcome to attend.

Walking group meets at Veterans Memorial Park

Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship has a walking group that meets at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at at Veterans Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd. The group walks 30 minutes. Everyone is invited to come out and improve their health and make new friends. Walkers meet at the duck pond next to Pratte Field.

Ranger programs on tap at Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week.These include:

Ranger chat: "Water in the West" at 5 p.m. Satruday at the Boulder Beach amphitheater. Participants will learn about the factors affecting the availability of water in the West and its impact on Lake Mead.

Ranger chat: "Public Lands: Treasures of Southern Nevada, 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Participants will learn about the variety of public lands in the area.

Note: The visitor center will be closed on New Year's Day

Library to hold craft, story sessions

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include: Teen advisory group, 3 p.m. Monday in the community room. Open to those 12-18, the group offers advice on activities, programs and materials in the youth services department.

Craft, 5 p.m. Monday in the community room. Participants will make a calendar wheel. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required. Reservations are required by 4 p.m. Saturday.

Drop-in story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For those 0-5 years old

Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months.

Teen time, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. Those 12 and older are invited to come play games, work on homework or just hang out.

Craft, 1 p.m. Jan. 8 in the community room. Silk screening skills will be taught. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required by 8:30 p.m. Jan. 7.

Club to hear from head of county Republican Party

The Boulder City Republican Woman's Club will meet Jan. 21 in the banquet room at the Railroad Pass hotel and casino, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Guest speaker for the afternoon will be Ed Williams, chairman of Clark County Republican Party. Doors will open at 11 a.m., with lunch served at 11:45 a.m. Cost is $21 per person. Reservations are required and must be made by noon Jan. 14.

Appreciation lunch planned by Community Club

Boulder City Community Club will hold its January appreciation luncheon for members Jan. 28 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, 1501 Veterans Memorial Drive. The luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. Reservations are required.

Emergency Aid needs volunteers to help with operations

Emergency Aid of Boulder City, a nonprofit organization that assists residents of Boulder City and those who travel through the community, needs volunteers to assist with its operations. Emergency Aid operates a food pantry and provides financial assistance to those in the community who are in need. It is open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at the old Los Angeles Water and Power Building, 600 Nevada Way.

Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of three hours a week. There also are opportunities to help from your home. Emergency Aid relies on volunteers, grants and private donations to operate.

It was Christmas in July Saturday as those seeking a little holiday cheer filled the basement of the Masonic Temple. The Boulder City Community Club and the Boulder City History and Arts Foundation co-hosted the event, which included a visit from Santa and the Grinch and Christmas music by Patrick Mahoney and Maire Egan on fiddle. More than a dozen gift baskets were donated by local residents and merchants as raffle prizes, while the food was also free thanks to donations. Proceeds were split between to the two hosting organizations.
