Early voting at City Hall continues through Saturday

Early voting for the 2015 general election continues today through Saturday in the council chambers at City Hall, 401 California Ave.

City finalizes budget for new year

The city passed its final budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year Tuesday morning.

The budget, which totals a little more than $64 million, is divided into six funds. The general and utility funds, the two biggest, comprise about $60 million.

General fund revenue is up by 9.5 percent, according to the budget, but the utility fund is down by 6 percent.

When the city discussed its tentative budget in March, City Manager Dave Fraser said one cause for the unhealthy utility fund is the city’s low utility rates.

He said overall, the city’s budget was still on the right track.

Eight statues to be introduced during May 30 Artwalk

Boulder City Public Art Scape invites area residents to attend its Artwalk at 4:30 p.m. May 30. During the walk, eight new statues will be introduced to the community.

Those attending are asked to meet in front of the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

The sculptures’ artists are expected to attend.

A reception on the patio of the hotel will be held immediately after the walk. During the reception, awards will be presented to the winning artists from last year’s sculptures.

Inspections planned as part of Safe Boating Week observance

Is your boat ready for summer? Free vessel inspections will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hemenway Harbor at Lake Mead.

The vessel inspections inform visitors about required safety equipment, proper registration and permits, proper lighting, signaling devices, marine sanitation devices and fire prevention components. As a convenience, safety equipment will be available for purchase at park marinas.

The inspections, offered by the National Park Service, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Nevada Wildlife Department, are part of the National Safe Boating Week observance and mark the official launch of the 2015 North American Safe Boating campaign.

“Preventive maintenance and preseason mechanical checks are good ways to prevent mishaps and accidents,” said Christie Vanover, park spokesperson. “People should also be alert to weather conditions, avoid alcohol while operating a boat and always wear a life jacket when in the water.”

BC can ban backyard breeders

Although there is nothing on any city agenda yet, the resolution of the issue of whether pet breeding will be allowed in Boulder City took a huge step forward last week as Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford released an official opinion on the intent and limitations of state law that had been requested by city staff last year.

Completion dates for two road projects pushed back

Mayor Joe Hardy tacitly acknowledged that Boulder City gets, perhaps, more than its fair share of funding from the Regional Transportation Commission, given the city’s size.

Parallel parking approved

Like so many other things in the world of Boulder City government, the issue of reconfiguring parking in the historic downtown area along Nevada Way, which generated enough heat to cause council members to delay a decision up until the last possible moment, ended with more of a whimper than a bang.
