Artist who worked at film studios to speak tonight

The Boulder City Art Guild and Gallery will present it’s first Thursday talk at 6:30 p.m. today in the gallery at Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Guest speaker will be Tommy Tucker, a painter, sign writer and muralist. Tucker studied with Hudson Valley Artists and in New York, Indianapolis, Yale and University of Southern California.

As a sign writer for 31 years, he worked for all the major studios in Hollywood. Additionally, his murals can be seen at the Indiana University School of Law and USC’s law school.

A question-and-answer session will follow Tucker’s presentation.

Auditions on tap Saturday for ‘BC’s Got Talent’ show

Auditions will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Elaine K. Smith Center, 700 Wyoming St., for the annual “BC’s Got Talent” show, which will be May 17.

Competition will be in two age division: Children 16 and younger and those 17 and older. Cash prizes will be awarded in both divisions.

There is a $10 entry fee.

Fishing class to be at Veterans Memorial Park

A fishing workshop designed to teach those 8 and older responsible fishing practices will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the fishing pond in Veterans Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.

Participants will learn knot tying, line rigging, baiting, casting and reeling techniques.

Cost is $25 per person and includes bait and tackle. A limited number of fishing rods will be available.

Participants 12 and older and non-Nevada residents must have a current Nevada fishing license, which can be obtained by visiting www.ndow.org.

Photographer joins ‘Celebration of Smiles’ event

Photographer Pamela Leon, owner of 28 Sunflowers Photography in Boulder City, will join with PPA Charities (the philanthropic arm of Professional Photographers of America) to promote Celebration of Smiles Day Saturday.

This national fundraising effort will benefit Operation Smile, which treats children around the world who suffer from cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.

During the event, PPA photographers will provide an individual portrait session and a desk-size portrait in exchange for a $24 donation, which represents one-tenth of $240, the amount needed to help fund a single surgery.

Basic obedience for dogs class to begin Monday

A dog obedience class is being offered by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. It will begin Monday. Others are set to begin May 19 and July 14.

The six-week course is designed for those 10 and older, with children 10-14 requiring an adult to participate. It will teach five basic obedience commands.

Classes will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the multiuse building at Broadbent Park, 1204 Sixth St. Dogs should not be brought to the first session.

Cost is $50 per session.

Participants must bring motivational treats and a 15-foot leash.

Lopez Memorial Tennis tourney scheduled

The second annual Jimmie Lopez Memorial Tennis Tournament will be April 26 at the city’s tennis courts in Broadbent Park, 1301 Fifth St. Tournament play will be divided into several age divisions.

Participants need to be at the tennis courts by 7 a.m. Play is set to begin at 7:30 a.m.

A $15 entry fee is requested by Tuesday. Late registrations and those the day of the tournament will be $20.

Performing arts program for children offered

Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department’s children’s performing arts program, Rising Stars, recently began a new session. Open to children 4 and older, it will be from 3-4 p.m. in the multiuse building in Broadbent Park, 1204 Sixth St.

It will focus on singing, dancing and performing skills. Sessions continue on Tuesdays through May 13 and will conclude with a May 17 performance at the “BC’s Got Talent” show.

Cost is $50 per child, plus a $10 T-shirt fee for new students. A $5 discount is provided for a second child in the same family.

Episcopal church to hold rummage sale April 12

St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 12 at the church, 812 Arizona St. The sale will include household goods, clothing, miscellaneous items and a bake sale.

All proceeds will benefit church outreach programs.

Art Guild’s fine arts festival to be April 12-13

Boulder City Art Guild will present its 29th annual Fine Arts Festival April 12-13 in Bicentennial Park, 400 Colorado St.

More than 130 Southwestern artists will display work, including watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings, glass, sculpture, pottery, metalwork, photography and jewelry. Featured artists will be Brianna Gray, a photographer, and Karen Petrovich, who paints in oils.

The festival also will feature a fine art raffle, with proceeds benefiting a scholarship fund and musical entertainment.

Science Day on tap at Cooperative Extension

4-H, a University of Nevada Cooperative Extension youth development program, invites residents to its 4-H Science Day April 17.

The day’s events, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will include hands-on activities and demonstrations on rocketry, chemical reactions, electricity, geocaching and wind energy.

Language class for young children offered

Boulder City Parks and Recreation is offering a Language for Tots class that will introduce youngsters ages 3-5 to Spanish, German, Italian and French.

It will be offered from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays in April and May at the recreation center and in June and July at the ABC Park administration building.

Cost for the program is $32 per month.

Instructor Beatrice Werner teaches at CSN and has a master of arts degree from the School of Languages of Middlebury College. She speaks five languages and has taught people of all ages.

Registration underway at Grace Christian Academy

Registration for the 2014-2015 school year at Grace Christian Academy is underway in the school office.

A $140 nonrefundable registration fee as well as a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunization record are required.

Lake Mead experiences temporary closures

Portions of Wetland Trail in Lake Mead National Recreation Area are temporarily closed through June 30 during the construction of a grade control structure in the Lower Las Vegas Wash.

The trail head and parking area on Northshore Road along with adjacent areas will be closed to access, hiking and other recreational uses.

The grade control structure will reduce erosion in the Las Vegas Wash to protect the stability of the bridge. It also will reduce sediment transported from erosion in the wash into Lake Mead, as well as protect Lake Las Vegas Dam and outlet works.

Additionally, Virgin River Basin is closed through May 12. The closed area includes the northern tip of the recreation area where the Virgin River meets Lake Mead. A map of the closed area is available at www.nps.gov/lake/parknews/2014impoundment.htm.

The Bureau of of Land Management, Southern Nevada District Office, and National Park Service are taking steps to resolve a long-standing cattle trespass on federal lands. The closure is needed to ensure the safety of the public, federal employees and contractor personnel as unauthorized cattle are gathered.

Emergency Aid seeks volunteers to work in office

Emergency Aid of Boulder City is seeking volunteers from 9-11:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers are needed to work in the office, assist clients or help with small office-type projects. The ability to work on a computer would be beneficial.

Emergency Aid is housed at the Department of Water and Power Building, 600 Nevada Way.

Emergency Aid is an all-volunteer organization.

Vendors sought for 10th annual barbecue event

HELP of Southern Nevada will present its 20th annual Golfers’ Roundup fundraiser and is seeking sponsorships for the tournament.

The event will tee off at 8:30 a.m. June 24 at Cascata Golf Course, 1 Cascata Drive. The entry fee is $350 for an individual or $1,400 for a team of four. Sponsorships are available starting at $1,500.

The nonprofit organization helps those in need, including the homeless or those in a crisis situation.

Area residents are invited to attend the Friends and Family of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease support group. The group meets at 10 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 813 Arizona St.

Bruce Borchard of Vital Care leads the group, which explores ways for better living with COPD, asthma and emphysema. It is sanctioned by the Better Breathers and American Lung Association.

Support groups help with memory loss, dementia

The Homestead at Boulder City is offering its Alzheimer’s support group, memory loss support group and dementia workshops on the third Thursday of each month. The groups will meet in the library at The Homestead, 1401 Medical Park Drive.

The Alzheimer’s group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the memory loss group meets from 1-2 p.m.

There is no cost for these workshops and refreshments will be served. Those attending are welcome to bring a loved one, who will be cared for during the meeting.
