Club meetings, crafts on tap at library

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming week. These include:

n Odd Squad Club, 10 a.m. today in the community room. Part of a four-week session for kindergartners through fifth-graders.

n Lego challenge, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.

n Science Exploration Club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.

n Keeping Kids Fit Club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. The six-week program educates kids and caregivers about the importance of eating and living healthy.

n Movie, 5:30 p.m. today in the community room. “Concussion” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

n Anime club, 5 p.m. Monday in the board room. For those in junior high grades.

n Live animals with Chuck Meyer, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in the community room. Get up close and personal with native Southern Nevada animals.

n Crafts, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. For all ages.

n Positive Action for Teens, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. WestCare will host a nationally recognized program for improving academic performance and behavior.

Lake Mead to host moonlight hike

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week. These include:

n Ranger hike, Under the Moonlight, Saturday. Join a ranger for a moonlight hike along the Historic Railroad Trail. Those attending should bring a flashlight. Advance reservations required.

n Ranger program: “Coyotes: What You Should Know,” 1 p.m. Sunday at the Willow Beach Marina breezeway. Participants will learn why they should observe coyotes from a distance.

Reception to launch new art exhibit at lodge

A variety of fine arts, including paintings and ceramics, all focused on outdoor recreational activities at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, are being showcased in a new exhibit at Hoover Dam Lodge.

Members of Boulder City Art Guild, whose work is featured in the exhibit, will be recognized during a reception from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the resort. Refreshments will be served and all interested people are welcome to attend.

The exhibit continues through November.

Hoover Dam Lodge is at 18000 U.S. Highway 93.

Other art guild activities include “Art From the Heart,” an exhibit at Boulder City Hospital, 901 Adams Blvd., which continues through Aug. 31.

Additionally, the works of guild member Dotty Fenner are on display at the group’s gallery inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St. Much of her work was inspired by the desert bighorn sheep and local desert. The exhibit continues through June 30.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Every now and again you come across a product that makes you stand back and say, “Wow, that worked way better than I thought it would!” These gleeful moments come as a welcome surprise when we’re often disappointed by products that overpromise and under-deliver. When I find these little gems, I store them away in my mental DIY toolbox. This past month, I was happy to add a few more “must have” products that exceeded my expectations.

Ordinance promotes cleanliness, accessibility of public places

Individuals camping in public spaces has increased dramatically in the past few years across the nation. On May 27 the city of Boulder City joined the cities of Reno, Las Vegas, Henderson, and Sparks, along with Clark, Washoe, and Nye counties in passing a measure to expand the prohibition on camping in public places within city limits. The new ordinance goes into effect on June 19, 2025.

A relatively small but appreciative crowd turned out Saturday evening for Jazz in the Park, sponsored by the Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department and the Las Vegas Jazz Society. The evening featured the Marlane Coker Quintet and guest at Bicentennial Park.
