Rate increases topic for club

The Boulder City Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Discussions will focus on the primary election and the recent utility rate increases imposed by the city council.

In addition to club members, the general public is encouraged to join the discussion.

Elks to host Flag Day ceremony

The Boulder City Elks Lodge will host a Flag Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday at the lodge, 1217 Nevada Highway.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of United States flag by the second Continental Congress in 1777. The ceremony will include a presentation of colors by the Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard and an exhibition by Boy Scout Troop 7 on the history of the flag. The event is open to the public.

See Spot Run to host ‘pup crawl’

See Spot Run will present its seventh annual poker run, pup crawl and silent auction Saturday. The event, scheduled from 5-9:30 p.m., will include stops at several local pubs.

Participants can visit in any order and collect cards, turning in their best high or low hand by 9 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9:30 p.m. at the Boulder Dam Brewing Co., 453 Nevada Way, which is also the starting point.

Pubs and eateries participating in the event are: Boulder Bowl, Boulder Dam Brewing Co., The World Famous Coffee Cup, The Dillinger Food and Drinkery, Evan’s Old Town Grille, Grandma Daisy’s, Jack’s Place, Milo’s Cellar, Oasis Boutique Motel, Southwest Diner and Tony’s Pizza.

Tickets are $20 each.

Art guild to honor Fenner

Boulder City Art Guild will host a reception for artist Dotty Fenner from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at its gallery inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Fenner’s collection of mixed media paintings and ceramics are on display in the gallery. Much of her work was inspired by the desert bighorn sheep and local desert.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Library hosts clubs and crafts

Clubs and crafts headline a full roster of events at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. These include:

■ Best Dam Readers Book Club, 9 a.m. today in the community room. The topic for the month is open.

■ Odd Squad club, 10 a.m. today in the community room.

■ STEAM club, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. Explore science, technology, engineering, art and math through stories, crafts and activities. For those 6-11.

■ Keeping Kids Fit Club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. The six-week program educates kids and caregivers about the importance of eating and living healthy. Those interested can sign up in the youth department.

■ Movie, 5:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be shown.

■ Craft, faux stained glass, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. Reservations are required by 8:30 tonight; classes require a $5 refundable deposit and are open to all people over 12.

■ Anime club, 5 p.m. Monday in the board room. For those in junior high grades.

■ Father’s Day craft hour, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the community room.

■ Evening book club, 7 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. The book for the month will be “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins.

■ Positive Action for Teens, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. WestCare will host a nationally recognized program for improving academic performance and behavior.

■ Family story time, 6 p.m. Wednesday in the community room.

■ Library board of directors, 7 p.m. Wednesday in the board room.

Lake rangers to talk about desert

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week. These include:

■ Nevada free fishing day, Saturday. No license or trout stamp is needed for adults or children to fish. Limits and other regulations apply. For details, visit www.ndow.org.fish.free_fishing_day/.

■ Ranger chat: “The Mojave Desert: A Magical Land,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Participants will learn about the desert flora and fauna including beavertail cactus and desert bighorn sheep.

■ Ranger hike, “Under the Moonlight,” June 18. Join a ranger for a moonlight hike along the Historic Railroad trail. Those attending should bring a flashlight. Advance reservations required.

Lend A Hand seeks volunteers

Lend A Hand is in need of additional volunteers to provide assistance to Boulder City’s senior and disabled residents. It will hold a training class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 21 at the Lend A Hand office, 400 Utah St.

Widows support group dark for the summer

Anew, a support group for widows, will not meet for the next three months. Those who have attended in the past, and those new to the group, are encouraged to get together for the summer lunch activities until the next meeting, which is set for Sept. 10 at the Boulder City Library.
