Special tributes planned to honor veterans

There will be a variety of ceremonies in Boulder City in honor of Veterans Day on Wednesday. Here's where the events around town will be held.

American Legion

Sticking to tradition, the American Legion Post 31 will hold its service on the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, according to Second Vice Commander Dawn Walker.

"What we do is pay tribute to past and present veterans," Walker said. "We'll have the color guard come in, singers and a guest speaker. The service will last about an hour."

The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Doug Morse, United States Air Force retired U-2 pilot.

The Legion's Veterans Day service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Legion Hall, 508 California Ave. Veterans families and the public are welcome.

Senior Center of Boulder City

In honor of Boulder City veterans and what they have done for the country, Executive Director Victoria Mason is inviting veterans and their families to join her for lunch Wednesday.

"I'm paying for lunch for anyone who comes in honor of those who served," she said. "Without them, a lot of us wouldn't be here."

Mason said in addition to a roast beef sandwich lunch, the celebration will include a special presentation and activities relating to veterans. Last year, Mason said, she created a musical and pictorial tribute to veterans, showcasing each branch of the Armed Forces along with World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War.

She also said she wants to be sure that all widows and widowers of veterans know they are especially welcome.

Lunch at the senior center, 813 Arizona St., is scheduled from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Veterans Home

A veterans recognition ceremony will be held at the Nevada State Veterans Home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will be there to address all attendees.

Highlights of the event include a flyover procession directed by Nellis Air Force Base, a vocal choir that will perform patriotic songs and local musician Phil Esser.

The public is invited to attend this event.

The veterans home is at 100 Veterans Memorial Drive.

When household products overpromise and actually deliver

Every now and again you come across a product that makes you stand back and say, “Wow, that worked way better than I thought it would!” These gleeful moments come as a welcome surprise when we’re often disappointed by products that overpromise and under-deliver.
