Free seminar to focus on dementia, depression

A free seminar about dementia, depression and Alzheimer's disease will be presented at 10 a.m. Friday at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.

The session will focus on what to do after receiving a diagnosis of dementia, Alzheimer's or depression, as well as what resources and support are available for the patient, caregiver and family members.

The presentation is part of the Managing New Seasons series presented by the Nevada Community Coalition.

Butterflies topic for garden club speaker

The Boulder City Garden Club will meet at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Guest speaker will be Ralph Sgamma, who will talk about "Butterflies in Your Garden."

Library schedules variety of activities

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

— Crazy 8s math club, 3:30 p.m. today in the board room. For children 5-8. Reservations requested.

— Teen movie, 5 p.m. today in the community room. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.

— Game day, 1 p.m. Monday in the community room.

— Preschool story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children 3-5 and their caregivers.

— Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months.

— Teen time, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. Those 12 and older are invited to come play games, work on homework or just hang out.

Note, the library will be closed Friday for Nevada Day.

Halloween events on tap at Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming weeks. These include:

— Evening program: Halloween crafts and stories, 5 p.m. Friday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center.

— Evening hike: "Scary, Scary Nights Hike," 6 p.m. Friday. Join rangers for a three-mile hike along the Historic Railroad Trail.

— Ranger program: "All Day Halloween Fun," 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. An arts and crafts party will be held, with guests able to make desert animal masks and decorate a Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls.

Art guild schedules annual winter show

Boulder City Art Guild will present its 11th annual Winter ArtFest Nov. 7 and 8 in the gym at the Parks and Recreation Department, 900 Arizona St.

The show will include a range of art and gifts by Southwestern artists, including original paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, ceramic, glass, pottery and metal.

The festivities also will include a pine cone decorating contest for elementary school students from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days, with assistance from high school students who live at St. Jude's Ranch for Children.

Also, photos with Santa will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

Admission is free.

Tickets for the guild's winter fundraiser, a chance to win a pair of tickets to Vegas PBS's "Downton Abbey" Afternoon Tea along with other prizes, will be available at the art show.

Medicare topic for speaker at Lakeview Terrace

Two representatives from the state's Aging and Disability Services Division will speak about Medicare at Lakeview Terrace of Boulder City, assisted living community, 180 Ville Drive from 12:30-2 p.m. Nov. 7.

The Nevada Senior Medicare Patrol will discuss how Medicare beneficiaries can protect their identity and detect and report improper payments in the Medicare system. Additionally, Nevada State Health Insurance Assistance Program will provide general information about Medicare and open enrollment, which takes place now through Dec. 7.

The program is being hosted in connection with the Senior Center of Boulder City and will include a question-and-answer session.

All are welcome to attend.

 

Art guild to present origami class

Boulder City Art Guild is presenting an origami class from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Spillway Lounge at Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St. Lynda Whitehair will teach the class and focus on holiday ornaments.

The class is limited to 15 people, and all supplies will be provided. Cost is $25 per person.

Additionally, the guild is taking reservations for a long-pose life drawing and painting session scheduled from 12-3 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Elaine K. Smith Building, 700 Wyoming St.

 

Bible study class on tap at Lakeview Terrace

Area residents are invited to join a Bible study class presented jointly by Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship and Lakeview Terrace of Boulder City.

The weekly sessions are offered from 10-11:15 a.m. Thursdays at Lakeview Terrace, 180 Ville Drive, and is part of the Converge Bible Study series. The series uses topics and questions to encourage personal reflection and group conversation.

Topics to be studied include who you are in Christ, encountering grace, Holy Spirit and community.

A donation of $9 per session is requested.

Presidential election topic for Republican women

The Boulder City Republican Woman's Club will have its monthly luncheon Nov. 19 in the banquet room at Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino, 2800 Boulder Highway, Henderson.

A presidential candidate forum will be held, with representatives from the various campaigns speaking.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. and lunch will begin at 11:45. Cost is $21 per person.

See Spot Run sets bake sale, work day

See Spot Run will hold a bake sale from 9 a.m. until closing Nov. 13 at Boulder Dam Credit Union, 530 Avenue G.

A variety of gift items will be available.

Additionally, the group that operates the dog park at Veterans' Memorial Park will have its 2016 calendar available. Showcasing pets playing at the park, it will be sold for $15.

It also will be selling special pavers to honor your pet.

All proceeds will be used to help maintain the facility.

On Nov. 14, the group will have a work day at the park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd. They will be there from 9 a.m. to noon.

Every now and again you come across a product that makes you stand back and say, “Wow, that worked way better than I thought it would!” These gleeful moments come as a welcome surprise when we’re often disappointed by products that overpromise and under-deliver. When I find these little gems, I store them away in my mental DIY toolbox. This past month, I was happy to add a few more “must have” products that exceeded my expectations.

Ordinance promotes cleanliness, accessibility of public places

Individuals camping in public spaces has increased dramatically in the past few years across the nation. On May 27 the city of Boulder City joined the cities of Reno, Las Vegas, Henderson, and Sparks, along with Clark, Washoe, and Nye counties in passing a measure to expand the prohibition on camping in public places within city limits. The new ordinance goes into effect on June 19, 2025.
