Injured hiker rescued from closed trail

Hiker airlifted to hospital after breaking arm near Hoover Dam

A 19-year-old man was rescued Sunday from a hiking trail near Hoover Dam, police said.

At 4:20 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue Unit responded to the Gold Strike Trail where the man and some friends had strayed off the path, about 4 miles west of Hoover Dam, Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

The man had fallen and suffered a compound fracture to his arm, Hadfield said. He had "significant bleeding."

Search and Rescue ground officers were unable to reach the man and his friends, so police deployed a rescue helicopter and airlifted the man to University Medical Center, Hadfield said.

National Park Service spokeswoman Christie Vanover said the Gold Strike Trail was closed and is not scheduled to open until today.

It was not immediately clear whether the hikers would face charges.
