Democratic Club meeting to feature Organizing for Action presentation

The Boulder City Democratic Club will host its monthly meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. A presentation by Organizing for Action will be featured.

Club members and interested people are welcome to attend the meeting.

Free Valentine’s dance to be held Saturday evening at LDS church

The Boulder City Ballroom Club invites area residents to its community Valentine’s dance, “All the Things You Are.” It will be Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 916 Fifth St.

Free dance instructions will be offered from 7 to 7:30 p.m., with the dance, social and refreshments scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. No dance experience is required.

Couples and singles are welcome.

Admission is free.

Author Spivack will speak at Republican Women’s meeting

Boulder City Republican Women will host its monthly meeting Feb. 19 at Railroad Pass, 2800 S. Boulder Highway. The session will begin at 11 a.m., with lunch served at 11:45.

Guest speaker will be noted author Loren Spivack of Massachusetts.

Cost is $21 per person. Reservations are required and must be made by noon today.

See Spot Run needs volunteers to help with projects at dog park

See Spot Run is seeking volunteers to help during its work day Saturday at the dog park in Veterans Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.

A variety of projects will be worked on from 9 a.m. to noon.

Free training class scheduled for new Lend a Hand volunteers

Lend a Hand will offer a free training class for those interested in volunteering for the nonprofit organization. It will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Lend a Hand helps senior citizens, disabled and handicapped residents of Boulder City by driving them to appointments across the Las Vegas Valley and providing help, respite and companionship, allowing them to remain in their homes.

The training session will be at the Lend a Hand office, 400 Utah St. Lunch will be provided.

St. Christopher’s to prepare for Lent with pancake supper

St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church will prepare for Lent by hosting a traditional pancake supper at 6:30 p.m. on Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the church, 812 Arizona St.

The following day, Ash Wednesday, the church will impose ashes at 8 a.m., noon and 6:45 p.m.

All are welcome.

Community blood drive set for Feb. 19 in church gymnasium

A blood drive sponsored by the Boulder City community and Boulder City Hospital will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the chapel gymnasium at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 916 Fifth St.

Museum’s Third Thursday event focuses on Desert Sands Pottery

Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum will present “Desert Sands Pottery with Dan Bunch” as its Third Thursday at the Museum program at 6 p.m. Feb. 19.

Desert Sands Pottery was owned and operated in Boulder City by Arthur Evans and his family. They used ordinary desert clay gathered from the area and colored it with mineral pigments from the hills of Nevada and Arizona.

Bunch is an avid collector of Desert Sands Pottery and plans to write a book about it in the next year.

He began working for the Bureau of Reclamation in 1967 and has been involved in the community as a director of the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association and director and president of the Senior Center of Boulder City.

The meeting will be in the Segerblom Theatre at the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

All interested people are welcome to attend.

Bethany Baptist Church will host gospel quartet Sunday

Bethany Baptist Church, 210 Wyoming St., will present a free concert at 6 p.m. Sunday featuring the Blackwood Quartet.

The ensemble is a descendant of the Blackwood Brothers and specializes in gospel music.

All are welcome to attend.

Library schedules variety of events, including story times

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

n Bedtime Math Club, 3:45 p.m. Friday in the community room. The eight-week program features hands-on math games for children in kindergarten through second grade.

n Science Exploration Club, 3 p.m. Friday in the board room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts; for children ages 3 to 6.

n Preschool story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room; for children ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers.

n Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room; for children younger than 36 months.

n Library board of trustees meeting, 7 p.m. Wednesday in the board room.

Lake Mead entrance fee to be waived during holiday weekend

Lake Mead National Recreation Area will waive the entrance fee Saturday through Monday for park visitors in celebration of Presidents Day. Other fees, such as those for camping and lake use, still apply.

Additional activities for the weekend include:

n Ranger chat, “Wingspan Myths,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center on Lakeshore Drive. Participants will learn about the wingspans of a variety of desert birds.

n Ranger hike, Historic Railroad Trail, Saturday. Hike along an old railroad bed, which leads to five large tunnels. Call for reservations and time.

n Sunset program, “Bats: Friend or Foe,” 5 p.m. Sunday at the Boulder Beach Campground amphitheater. Learn about bat myths and how the flying mammals benefit the planet.

Red Mountain Choir to begin rehearsals for spring concert

Red Mountain Choir will conduct rehearsals for its spring concert, “Masquerade,” from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday. Rehearsals will be at the Elaine K. Smith Center, 700 Wyoming St.

The choir will perform April 17 and 18.

Anyone 15 or older who enjoys singing is welcome to participate.

Chess is an immersive 1v1 board game that requires high strategies and patience. The rules of chess may seem simple, but it requires deep thinking. Each player has sixteen pieces. These pieces are often black and white so there is no confusion during the match. The white player makes the first move and then from there, the game begins. The goal in these matches is to attack your opponent’s King piece with no way to escape, also known as a checkmate. This will cause the match to end and a win for whoever checkmates. The match can also end with a draw. Consenting to a draw is when there is no way to achieve a checkmate. This year at Boulder City High School, students have decided to take on this challenge of creating a chess team.
