Democratic Club meets tonight at library
The Boulder City Democratic Club monthly meeting will be held at 6:30 tonight at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. The meeting will be in the smaller conference room.
A presentation regarding volunteer needs in Boulder City is scheduled and plans for the upcoming general election will be discussed.

Movies in the Park, Wine Walk this Saturday
The temperatures outside may be warm Saturday night, but it will get downright cold — actually “Frozen” — in Bicentennial Park as the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce hosts its second Movies in the Park for the summer.
The festivities begin at 7 p.m. with the animated feature shown around sunset.
There is no cost to attend and people are invited to bring blankets or chairs to sit on.
The movie will be preceded by a Wine Walk.
Scheduled from 4-7 p.m., the event invites people to visit area businesses where they can sample wine, hors d’oeuvres and other treats. The cost is $25 per person or $45 per couple.
The Wine Walk begins at the chamber office, 465 Nevada Way, where participants can purchase their wine glass and receive a map of participating businesses.
The map also offers the opportunity to participate in a special prize drawing.
American Legion seeks preferences for blood drive
The American Legion of Boulder City is planning to hold a blood drive in September or October. To determine the best day and time for the event, post members are requesting that interested donors call them at 702-293-6374 or email BCPost31@embarqmail.com to state their preferences.
In addition to stating what time or date would be ideal for making blood donations, the post is asking potential donors to provide their name and contact information.

Free class about kidney health set for July 29
Boulder City Hospital, in conjunction with the Senior Center of Boulder City and the Nevada Community Prevention Coalition, is presenting a free Kidney Smart class. It will be held at 10 a.m. July 29 at the Senior Center, 813 Arizona St.
During the class, the five stages of kidney failure and disease will be discussed.

Dog obedience class will begin Monday
A dog obedience class offered by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department begins Monday.
The six-week course is designed for those 10 and older, with children 10-14 requiring an adult to participate. It will teach five basic obedience commands.
Classes will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the multiuse building at Broadbent Park, 1204 Sixth St. Dogs should not be brought to the first session.
Cost is $50.
Participants must bring motivational treats and a 15-foot leash.

Veterans of Foreign Wars’ monthly meeting Saturday
The Boulder City Veterans of Foreign Wars and its ladies auxiliary will have its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.
Lunch will start the session, with the business meeting to follow at noon.

Parks department schedules summer program for children
Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department is offering children in kindergarten through fifth grade a fun playground program this summer. Summer Parks will include activities such as field trips, arts and crafts, games, sports and special events.
The summer program continues through Aug. 22. Cost is $9 for a half day and $18 for a full day.

Library schedules variety of activities, events
Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:
n Martha Speaks Reading Buddies, 10 a.m. today in the community room. Vegas PBS presents the program to teach new words. For those 4-8. It continues each week through Aug. 7, which a certificate awarded to those who attend all classes.
n Computer class, 1:30 p.m. today. Introduction to the Windows operating system is the topic of the session. Class size is limited to five people. Reservations and a $5 refundable deposit are required.
n Movie and a craft, 5:30 p.m. today. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will be shown and a ceramics and scrapbook cards crafts are planned. For those 13 and older. Reservations are required.
n Science Exploration Club, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday in the board room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.
n Magic Tree House Book Club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the board room. “Good Morning, Gorillas” will be the theme. For those 6-11. Legos will be provided.
n Movie, 10 a.m. Monday in the community room. “Frozen” will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.
n The Legend of King Arthur presented by Hampstead Stage, 5 p.m. Monday in the community room. The tale of “The Sword in the Stone” will be presented. There will be opportunities for audience participation.
n Movie, 2 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. “The Story of Robin Hood” from 1952 will be shown. Bring blankets and snacks.
n Preschool storytime, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For children 3-5 and their caregivers.
n Toddler storytime, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months.
n Family storytime, 6 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. There will be science, crafts, games, Legos and stories.

Homestead’s series about Alzheimer’s continues
The Homestead of Boulder City will present the sixth in a series of eight workshops about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia at 10 a.m. July 17 at the library in its facility, 1401 Medical Park Drive. Mary Shapiro will lead the session, which is titled “Exploring Options as the Disease Progresses.”
After the workshop, the Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet in the library. The group is designed for caregivers and loved ones of those with Alzheimer’s.
At 1 p.m., the Memory Loss Support Group, designed for those experiencing mild to moderate memory loss, will meet.
Refreshments will be served and care is available during the sessions.
Malaria survivor to speak of his work in Uganda
Cameron Thompson, who contracted malaria while on a church trip to Uganda, will share his story at 11:30 a.m. July 20 at the Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.
His appearance is sponsored by the Boulder City United Methodist Church as part of the UMC international mission Imagine No Malaria. Through the mission, churches provide mosquito netting, education and treatment to thousands of people.
Additionally, the United Methodist Church operates hundreds of hospitals, clinics and health outposts in Africa and ensures the facilities have the diagnostic test and treatment equipment needed to save lives.
According to Imagine No Malaria, the disease kills one person every 60 seconds in sub-Saharan Africa.
Thompson is a resident of Boulder City and a 2011 graduate of Boulder City High School. Shortly after his graduation, he went with his church to work in an orphanage in Namulanda, Uganda, for half a year. He is currently attending UNLV.
A LemonAid stand will offer drinks for a donation to Imagine No Malaria following Thompson’s presentation.

Host families for exchange students sought
Host families are being sought for the fall semester and full school year for students between the ages of 15 and 18 who will be visiting the U.S. from around the world.
Host families serve as mentors and a home base for the students, who become members of the family and integrate into their hosts’ routines and traditions.
“Every year the state of Nevada plays host to talented, top-of-their-class students with the lifelong dream of studying in America,” said Darlene Benjamin, iE-USA’s area director. “Nevada’s spirit of hospitality and focus on academic enrichment makes it an ideal environment to develop cultural exchange and promote international diplomacy on a local level.”
iE-USA, the sponsoring program, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting education and understanding through intercultural and academic exchange. iE-USA is certified by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel and strictly adheres to all U.S. Department of State Student Exchange Program regulations and guidelines.
Exchange student participants undergo an extensive application and orientation process in their home country prior to being accepted into iE-USA’s program. Each student is responsible for his/her own spending money and full health insurance coverage.

Performance class for children on tap at park
A performance class for children ages 7-10 is being offered at the ABC Park art center.
Classes will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays.
It is scheduled July 29 through Aug. 21, with a final performance at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 21. The fee is $120.
The classes will be taught by Francyl Gawryn, music director, and Linda Nations, theater director.
Gawryn’s resume includes time as music director for Youth Theater Northwest in Seattle, Wash., a music instructor for preschool, elementary school students and youths, and as a professional singer and composer.
Nations has served as director of children’s theater, Kirk of Kildare, in Cary N.C., and as an environmental educator for elementary school students and youths.

Hospital auxiliary seeks volunteers
Volunteers are needed to work in Goldies’ Gift Shoppe and in long-term care at Boulder City Hospital.

Registration underway at Grace Christian Academy
Registration for the 2014-2015 school year at Grace Christian Academy is underway in the school office.
A $140 nonrefundable registration fee as well as a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunization record are required.
Half-day and full-day kindergarten classes are offered.
To complement the school’s core curriculum, specialty classes include art, physical education, music, music theory, explorations, and technology classes.

Emergency Aid seeks volunteers to work in office
Emergency Aid of Boulder City is seeking volunteers from 9-11:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers are needed to work in the office, assist clients or help with small office-type projects. The ability to work on a computer would be beneficial.
Emergency Aid is housed at the Department of Water and Power Building, 600 Nevada Way.
Emergency Aid is an all-volunteer organization.
Writers group meets every Thursday at library
The Boulder City Writers Group meets from 7-8:20 p.m. each Thursday in the community room at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.
Writers of all levels are welcome to attend to learn more about writing and receive feedback on their work.

American Legion breakfast served Thursday mornings
All veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion’s varied menu breakfast from 6-8:30 a.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Hall, 508 California Way, between Boulder Bowl and Grace Christian Academy. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.
Legionnaires and eligible veterans are invited to the American Legion meeting at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Support group helps family of those with breathing problems
Area residents are invited to attend the Friends and Family of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease support group. The group meets at 10 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 813 Arizona St.
Bruce Borchard of Vital Care leads the group, which explores ways for better living with COPD, asthma and emphysema. It is sanctioned by the Better Breathers and American Lung Association.
Walking group meets at Veterans Park
Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship has a walking group that meets at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd. Group members walk 30 minutes before they begin their day. The Boulder City Branch of American Association of University Women meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month in the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Local churches join for weekday worship
Boulder City United Methodist Church and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church offer a weekly worship called WOW or “Worship on Wednesday.” The 6:45 p.m. worship service is at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 812 Arizona St., and is a combination of contemporary praise music, prayer and a short reflection. The Revs. Sandy Johnson and Jim Lyons lead the service, with music direction by Bonnie McIntyre.
