Retired public employees set meeting

Lisa LaPlante, communications manager for Boulder City, will be the guest speaker at today’s, Nov. 8, meeting of the Boulder City Chapter of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada. The session will begin at 11 a.m. at The Homestead at Boulder City, 1401 Medical Park Drive.

Members will go to an area restaurant after the meeting for a no-host lunch.

Democrats to discuss election results

The Boulder City Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. today, Nov. 8, in the community room at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

During the session, members will discuss results of the general election and begin planning its January kickoff party.

All are welcome.

Anew to learn about Quail Ridge Manor

Anew Women’s Network, a support group for widows, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

Shara Johnson, community administrator at Quail Ridge Manor Apartments in Boulder City, will be the guest speaker. She will share information on Volunteers of America’s requirements for residency at the complex.

A light lunch will be served.

St. Christopher’s to hold annual bazaar

St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual Harvest Bazaar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the church, 812 Arizona St.

There will be holiday decor, gift items, baked goods, raffle prizes and homemade soup.

Republican women to hear Harris

The Boulder City Republican Women will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, Nov. 15, in the banquet room at Railroad Pass Casino, 2800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. The guest speaker will be radio personality Heidi Harris.

Doors will open at 11 a.m., and lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m.

Author to read about St. Thomas

Author Jackson Ellis, who wrote “Lords of St. Thomas,” will read from his historical novel based on the 1938 flooding of St. Thomas as Lake Mead was filling during a special event at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road.

Ellis also will provide a brief overview of the town’s history and its current status as a ghost town.

Pet portrait artist to display her work

Georgia Lawson’s artwork will be featured throughout November at the Boulder City Art Guild’s gallery inside the Boulder Dam Hotel.

Lawson, who works in oils, watercolors and acrylics, paints a variety of subjects, including landscapes, seascapes and still lifes. She is most recognized for her paintings of animals and is regularly commissioned to paint pet portraits.

The galley is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

The gallery is inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Giving back

Saturday evening, Calvary Chapel Boulder City hosted a back-to-school event at Veterans Memorial Park. There, free school supplies and clothing were given out to families. In addition, toys were raffled off, there were free hamburgers, live music and an appearance by the Boulder City Fire Department. Pastor Jason King said he was very happy with the turnout and wished to thank all of those who donated to the event.

Boulder Theatre to open its doors to events

Whether as a location for builders of Hoover Dam to escape the heat, a place to see movies with families, friends or a date, or a venue to enjoy ballet performances, the Boulder Theatre has been a favorite local historical landmark for nearly a century.

City not moving forward with motel district

It appears that everyone is on the same page in that they want to see motels in Boulder City retain their historic charm.

Ho(t), ho(t), ho(t)

It was Christmas in July Saturday as those seeking a little holiday cheer filled the basement of the Masonic Temple. The Boulder City Community Club and the Boulder City History and Arts Foundation co-hosted the event, which included a visit from Santa and the Grinch and Christmas music by Patrick Mahoney and Maire Egan on fiddle. More than a dozen gift baskets were donated by local residents and merchants as raffle prizes, while the food was also free thanks to donations. Proceeds were split between to the two hosting organizations.

City to appeal BLM’s data center plan

In a unanimous vote, the Boulder City Council voted to appeal the Trump administration’s unpopular approval of a data center that shut the public out.
