Story sessions, game night

on tap at library this week

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks. These include:

■ Martha’s True Stories, 2 p.m. today in the community room. A three-week club from Vegas PBS for those in kindergarten through fifth grade.

■ Lego challenge, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.

■ Science exploration club, 3:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. Explore science through stories, experiments and crafts. For children 3-6.

■ Family game night, 5:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. Celebrate the end of the summer reading program by playing games. “Pokemon 3: The Movie” will be shown. Participants can bring snacks or dinner.

■ Anime club, 5 p.m. Monday in the community room. For those in junior high grades.

■ Drop in story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For all ages.

■ Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months and their caregivers.

■ Family story time, 6 p.m. Wednesday in the community room.

Lake Mead plans centennial celebration, ranger chat

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week.

These include:

■ Ranger chat: “The Tortoise Among Us,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Learn about a the desert tortoise.

■ Centennial Founders Day Celebration, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Help celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th birthday. There will be a chance to make a colorful nature journal and learn about naturalist John Muir, one of the early “fathers” of national parks. Live desert animals will be on display and rangers will be on hand to answer questions about how they survive in the Mojave Desert.

Arduini’s ‘Children Unplugged’ on display at gallery

Jan Harris Arduini is Boulder City Art Guild’s featured art for August. An exhibit of her paintings and drawings entitled “Children Unplugged,” will remain on display in the guild’s gallery through Aug. 31.

Arduini studied fundamentals and life drawing at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, art history and portraits at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois, and oil painting classes at Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago.

After moving to Las Vegas in 2009, she has participated in more than 30 group shows and done several painting demonstrations.

The gallery inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St., is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Additionally, members have art exhibited at Hoover Dam Lodge, which will remain on display through November, and at the Boulder City Hospital, which will be displayed through Aug. 31.

What is a critical access hospital?

According to the Rural Health Information Hub, a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) is a designation given to eligible rural hospitals who meet certain criteria. This designation was created by Congress via the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 due to the closures of over 400 rural hospitals during the 1980s through the early 1990s. The CAH designation was designed to improve health care access to Americans living in rural areas as well as provided financial stability to the facilities that serve these communities.
