See Spot Run seeks ‘models’ to appear in calendar pictures

See Spot Run is looking for local dogs to feature in its 2017 calendar.

Photo shoots will be held from 6:30 p.m. until dark Friday at Wilbur Square Park on Colorado Street.

A second photo shoot will be held from 6-8 a.m. Saturday in the group’s dog park at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 1650 Buchanan Blvd.

Crafts, clubs, movie on library’s calendar for the week

Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd., has several activities planned for the coming weeks.

These include:

■ Martha’s True Stories, 2 p.m. today in the community room. A three-week club from Vegas PBS for those in kindergarten through fifth grade.

■ Lego challenge, 3:30 p.m. today in the community room. The session is designed for those 6 and older.

■ “Asbestos: What You Need to Know,” 4 p.m. today in the community room. The Center for Asbestos-Related Diseases will present the program.

■ Children’s Olympic craft hour, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday in the community room.

■ Movie, 5:30 p.m. Friday in the community room. “Point Break” will be shown.

■ Lake Mead geology, 1 p.m. Saturday in the community room. Join rangers from Lake Mead National Recreation for a discussion about the park’s geology. For those 6 and older.

■ Anime club, 5 p.m. Monday in the board room. For those in junior high grades.

■ Drop-in story time, 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board room. For all ages.

■ Pokemon night, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the community room. Lures will be dropped for “Pokemon Go” players and a movie will be shown at 6 p.m. For all ages.

■ Toddler story time, 10 a.m. Wednesday in the board room. For children younger than 36 months and their caregivers.

■ Positive Action for Teens, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. WestCare will host a nationally recognized program for improving academic performance and behavior.

■ Keeping Kids Fit Club, 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. The six-week program educates kids and caregivers about the importance of eating and living healthy.

■ Family story time, 6 p.m. Wednesday in the community room.

Lake Mead ranger to visit library, talk about birds

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has a variety of special events happening in the coming week. These include:

■ Ranger library program, Geology 101, 1 p.m. Saturday at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Join Lake Mead rangers to learn about the rock cycle. Activities for adults and children will be available.

■ Ranger chat: “Winging It,” 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center, 10 Lakeshore Road. Learn about the birds that call Lake Mead home.

■ Ranger library program, Story time with a ranger, 10 a.m. Tuesday at Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. Join a ranger and share a favorite story about the Mojave Desert. Songs and crafts will be part of the activities.

Democrats to hear Assembly candidate at Aug. 11 meeting

The Boulder City Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

State Assembly District 23 candidate and local resident Craig Jordahl is scheduled to speak.

Chess is an immersive 1v1 board game that requires high strategies and patience. The rules of chess may seem simple, but it requires deep thinking. Each player has sixteen pieces. These pieces are often black and white so there is no confusion during the match. The white player makes the first move and then from there, the game begins. The goal in these matches is to attack your opponent’s King piece with no way to escape, also known as a checkmate. This will cause the match to end and a win for whoever checkmates. The match can also end with a draw. Consenting to a draw is when there is no way to achieve a checkmate. This year at Boulder City High School, students have decided to take on this challenge of creating a chess team.
