Man faces murder charge five years after Boulder City man’s killing
More than five years after Scott Dingman’s death, the Boulder City Police Department has arrested a man on suspicion of murder in connection with the killing, the department announced in a press release Saturday.
The department said detectives arrested John Powell Morgan III Saturday in Henderson on one count of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon in connection with the May 31, 2021, fatal shooting on Fairway Drive near Pueblo Drive.
“Based on new information received in 2025, the case received another review by Boulder City Police investigators,” the release said. “In April 2025, Boulder City investigators executed a search warrant on Morgan III’s residence, in which investigators recovered new evidence that supported additional investigation. Investigators continued their efforts over the next year, identifying pertinent information which ultimately led to development of probable cause for the arrest of Morgan III.”
The Boulder City Review previously reported that Morgan had admitted to police that he shot Dingman but said he did so in self-defense after Dingman punched him in the face and drew his firearm following heavy drinking. According to a police report, Morgan said Dingman came at him with clenched fists before pulling out and pointing his pistol at his chest. Morgan previously told police that he pleaded for Dingman to stop before Morgan grabbed his own gun and “fired first,” the Boulder City Review reported.
The Clark County coroner’s office declared Dingman’s death a homicide, with him sustaining gunshot wounds to the chest and groin, the Boulder City Review reported.
The newspaper also reported that the Clark County district attorney’s office previously declined to prosecute the original case after the Boulder City Police Department submitted it for review in September 2021.
