Holidays are coming to Boulder City Library

The holidays are fast approaching and that means things are getting festive at the library.

To kick things off, we’ll be hosting a Boo-gie Bash in our community room that will be filled with Halloween-themed activities and games that are sure to be a blast for the whole family. That same day, the Boulder City Elks Lodge will be set up in the lobby giving away children’s coats for ages Pre-K to fifth grade while supplies last. And before we say goodbye to October, be sure to check the “inmates” on our Banned Books display. For those who aren’t aware, throughout the month of October, we put a spotlight on books that are frequently challenged or banned to help illustrate the importance of standing up against censorship.

Now, let’s get cozy and bid farewell to the summer heat and welcome some hopefully cooler months ahead. Whether it’s enjoying a hot beverage with a good book, or preparing for a festive feast with loved ones, the Boulder City Library has got you covered.

Our friends at Dam Roast House will be hosting a pop-up coffee shop on Oct. 29 and Nov. 19. They will bring delicious pastries and coffees from 10 to 11:30 a.m. so you can enjoy a nice pick-me-up while poring over our selection.

Looking to add some new recipes to your repertoire? Check out our How Not to Burn Toast class held every month where patrons get to learn unique recipes. On Oct. 30 we’ll have Michigan recipes, Nov. 21 brings potluck favorites, and Dec. 12 will be holiday treats.

If class settings aren’t your thing, why not bring the expertise of culinary masters into your own kitchen? Our non-fiction section is bountiful with cookbooks for all occasions and from every corner of the world. Just check out the 641-non-fiction section to see what we have on the shelf.

If you’re more of an audio/visual learner, be sure to check out cooking shows available for checkout on DVD or through Kanopy. Kanopy is an online database that you can stream directly to your tablet or TV with your library card number and pin. To visit Kanopy and try it out, go to the library’s main webpage bclibrary.org and visit Discover, Books and More, Streaming. From there you can get all set up. Need help getting logged in for the first time or learning more about a database? Sign up for a tech teacher appointment for a one-on-one learning experience with our information department.

Once you’ve finished reading every word of the Boulder City Review cover to back, you can head over to bclibrary.org for access to the New York Times to peruse even more recipes, games, and so much more. Visit the library’s main webpage, go to Discover, Online Resources, then Journals, Newspapers, and Magazines. Select New York Times and it will auto-fill in a code that will allow you access for 24 hours. No library card is needed, but you will need to create a New York Times account.

And now, after a long day of exploring all that the library has to offer, you’re ready to kick back and watch a good movie. Well, you’re in luck because our DVD selection can’t be beat. From horror classics to Oscar winners, we’re bound to have something for everyone. We’ve even got all the wonderfully campy Hallmark holiday movies to satisfy your guilty pleasures.

Before we wrap things up, be sure to mark your calendars for Dec. 19. Returning again is Duffy Hudson, who will be putting on both a Christmas magic show at 12 p.m., and a one-man performance of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at 2 p.m.
