End of the year helps us bring joy to others

Happy New Year, Boulder City and friends. Hope the past year has brought you some joy, love, experience and insight. I’d love to meet the person who says the entire year has been one of positivity. Truth be told, we really don’t learn much unless we have some fire to go along with the ice.

I can’t let the year end without saying how much all of us in public safety appreciate all the love and concern that members of this community have shown us. Moms, dads, kids and businesspeople alike have flooded our lobby with gifts and thanks for sacrifices given and yet to come.

I was in awe of the families that showed up on Christmas to take time from their own celebrations to bring us a treasure in appreciation for being away from our own.

I understand that there are less than desirable folks in any profession, but that doesn’t give us the right to take over an airplane because someone died in a crash; stop paying taxes because someone was overcharged; move into a vacant house because we lost our home, or burn someone’s business down because another person died in circumstances we are not totally privy to.

Come on, people. Time to grow up. Stop blaming others and keep our noses in our own backyard. Your kids may be sneaking out a window at night and breaking into cars (burglary); you find a few items in the bottom of your shopping cart that haven’t been paid for (shoplifting); and it’s not normal for every family trip to include a good dose of road-rage.

We all have our own list of things we can improve on in our lives — New Year’s commitments (resolutions are so last year!). Now, let’s get out there … .
