Lady Eagles’ golf team takes regional championship

Dominating the field, Boulder City High School girls golf won the 3A Southern regional championship on Oct. 8 at Aliante Golf Club.

Despite not playing their best golf of the season, the Lady Eagles’ quest for a third consecutive 3A state championship remained alive after capturing a team score of 711.

Rival Virgin Valley came in second with a team score of 787.

“If I’m being honest, we didn’t play our best golf as a team,” head coach Bobby Reese said. “We played well enough to win, but we know we’ll need to shoot lower at state if we hope to capture our third consecutive state championship and complete the three-peat.”

Leading the way for the Eagles, Emmerson Hinds finished second on the day with a total score of 163, while Makenzie Martorano finished third with a score of 172.

It was the first time all season Hinds didn’t finish first in a league match, falling to The Meadows’ Chloe Sakkab, who shot a 138, six under par for the two-day stretch.

Rounding out the top eight individually for the Eagles were Morgen Terrill (185) and Ashlyn Ruter (181), who finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Looking to finish off their three-peat, the Eagles will take the greens at Ruby View Golf Course Oct. 13-14 with hopes of sealing the deal.

“Our goal at state is simple: win a third consecutive state championship and complete the three-peat,” Reese said. “We have a great team with a tremendous opportunity to accomplish something special. We know that anything short of a state title would be a disappointment for this group of girls. I realize that puts a lot of pressure on them, but it has been our goal from day one and they have worked hard all season to put themselves in this position.”
