Tennis teams seek state titles

Continuing to be the gold standard in 3A tennis, both Boulder City High School tennis programs captured regional championships over the weekend.

Remaining undefeated in 3A play, the boys defeated rival Virgin Valley 10-6 on Oct. 8, while the girls beat American Heritage 10-6 on Oct. 9.

“I’m very proud of both teams,” head coach Rachelle Huxford said. “Coming into the season both teams had a goal of winning a state championship and this was the first step.”

Hanging tough with the rival Bulldogs, the doubles tandem of Miles Alder and Will Teeples led the way with a 3-0 record, while the duo of Grady Crine and Chase Herbolsheimer finished 2-0.

“Having a pair of teams you feel confident can get the job done is very beneficial,” Huxford said. “Miles and Will have been dominant all season and really have goals this upcoming individual tournament to finish as champions. Grady and Chase have also been very key for us during the second half of play. They’ve really come together to make a great team.”

Also sparking the Eagles offensive during the second half, singles competitor Jake Richards continues his dominant stretch of play with a 3-0 performance, while Nathan Law finished 1-0.

“Having Jake for second half has been big for us,” Huxford said. “Having him with our singles players and knowing he can get points has really taken the pressure off of everyone else.”

Taking the pressure of their teammates for the girls, the doubles tandem of Chelsie Larson and Lyla Gunson finished 3-0, helping the Eagles rebound from an early 1-5 deficit.

“Chelsie and Lyla have been amazing this season,” Huxford said. “They haven’t lost a match during 3A play all season.”

Lending a helping hand, the doubles tandem of Quinn Gibson and Harmony Cook finished 2-1, while the team of Emma Hobbs and Lillyana Gubler went 1-1.

In singles play, Audrey Humphrey finished 2-1, while both Abrina Soares and Brooklyn Koster finished 1-1.

Looking ahead to state, the boys will play Incline on Oct. 22 at Carson High School, while the girls will play South Tahoe.

“I believe both teams have what it takes to be champions,” Huxford said. “They’ve been great all season, tested by good teams. We’re hopeful we’ll continue to play well up north.”
