Soccer squad starts postseason with win over Equipo Academy

Continuing their regular-season momentum, Boulder City High School girls soccer defeated Equipo Academy, 2-0, in the opening round of the postseason on Oct. 26.

Coming off a nine-win regular season, the Eagles reached double digits against the Yeti, courtesy of goals from Lila Stankovic and Kora Remedi.

Hoping to continue to build upon their success, head coach Kristin Shelton is looking for her team to rise to the occasion during this postseason.

“For the remainder of postseason, we are really focusing on consistency to be successful,” said Shelton. “Playing these next few games has to be full of energy, using a positive mindset, and executing all the skills we have been working hard on all season. We are tweaking the little things that may be weaknesses, but we’re really focusing on our strengths as a team and using those to beat our opponents.”

One of the key strengths the Eagles have showcased this season is a diverse offensive scoring attack with nine different players having scored at least a goal this season, with five players scoring at least four or more.

“I think the diversity I have on this team is what really sets us apart from others,” Shelton said. “Many teams rely on just one or two players to rack up the points in a game, but we’re lucky to have numerous girls who have the ability to find the net. It really speaks to the trust these girls have in each other and I think that’s what is going to help us continue moving forward in playoffs.”

Showcasing this trust in their regular-season finale against Cristo Rey on Oct. 21, Brooklyn Rose, Savanna Starley and Stankovic each scored goals for the Eagles in a 3-0 victory.

Leading the team in both goals (17) and assists (10) Stankovic also dished out an assist against Cristo Rey. In the net, goalkeeper Reese Pusko recorded the shutout, making a pair of saves.

Her 66 saves on the season rank her seventh in the 3A classification. With their postseason continuing, coverage of the Eagles’ Oct. 28 match against Virgin Valley will appear in next week’s issue.
