Library gearing up for upcoming holidays

The holiday season is almost upon us, with Halloween coming up.

For October, we have some great Halloween programs, some fantastic partnerships, and Banned Books Week on Oct. 4-10.

Halloween is sneaking up on us and we are ready. We have Halloween Origami on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. It is folding spooky bats and other haunted creatures. Ages 8-plus with caregiver required for those ages 8-10. Creepy Creations Crafting will happen on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. Families will make various Halloween crafts to celebrate the spooky season. Ages 0-17 and caregiver. Boo-gie Bash will be on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. for ages 0-17 and caregiver. It will be an afternoon of Spooktacular fun with games, music, and more. Join us and then go trick or treat the BOOlevard.

Trick or Treat the Library at Storytime and parade through the building on Friday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. for ages 0-5 and caregiver; Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. for ages 2-3 and caregiver; and Thursday, Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m. for ages 0-2 and caregiver.

Immediately after story time, kids will get to parade around the library in their costumes and collect treats.

The Boulder City Library is very proud of some of our community partnerships. For example, we are partnering with the Boulder Dam Credit Union for four financial literacy courses: Fraud 101; Social Security Seminar; Retirement Readiness &Leaving a Legacy; and Home-Buying and Selling 101.

Another terrific partnership this October is with the Elks Lodge 1682 on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. This event will be a Coat Drive, where the Elks Lodge will be handing out coats to those in need who are in Pre-K to fifth grade. Not only will children get much-needed winter coats, but they will also get some information packets about the library and what it has to offer.

Other local businesses that we are working with this October include the Dam Roast House and Iron Rose Plants and Vintage. On every fourth Thursday, the Dam Roast House does a pop-up at the library from 10-11:30 a.m. In October, it will be the 22nd and part of the proceeds gets donated back to the library. Come get some delicious treats and coffee. Every third month on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., Iron Rose Plants and Vintage comes for the Plant Clipping Exchange with Iron Rose Plants and Vintage.

For October, it falls on Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Bring a clipping, get a plant clipping, and get advice on raising your plant from Melissa from Iron Rose.

Banned Books Week is in October each year and the library always celebrates with special events and displays. Let’s celebrate your freedom to read by checking out some of our convicted books, completing the Banned Books Bingo, and attending the movie “Banned Together” on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.

The movie is being shown through our Kanopy service the library subscribes to and can be streamed at home as well with a library card number. This Banned Books Week, you can even win special Banned Book shirts and mugs made in the library’s Makerspace and designed by our staff.
