Lady Eagles remain in second place in league play

Bouncing back from their first league defeat of the season, Boulder City High School girls soccer added a pair of wins this past week to build some momentum.

“I think the team has responded well coming back from a loss,” head coach Kristin Shelton said. “We knew Moapa was going to be a hard game, but they pushed us and that’s the only way we learn. We are coming back stronger into the second half of the season now.”

Advancing to 6-1-2 on the season and up to second place in the league standings, the Eagles defeated Cristo Rey 9-0 on Sept. 28 in league action, along with a 2-0 victory over White Pine on Sept. 25 in non-league play.

Playing at their best against Cristo Rey, six Eagles scored a goal, headlined by Lila Stankovic, who scored three goals, while dishing out a pair of assists and making four steals.

“Lila is playing great and definitely an asset to our team,” Shelton said. “She is becoming such a mature player on the field, not only getting points on the board, but just overall helping keep control of the game. She is becoming more confident in herself and I look forward to seeing how she continues to develop throughout this year and the ones to come.”

Susan Muir added a pair of goals, while Kora Redemi added a goal and assist each.

Spreading the ball around, Hannah Stark, Brooklyn Rose and Savanna Starley each added a goal for the Eagles.

Setting up their teammates were Shasta Ryan-Willett and Tayla Huntsman with assists.

Playing lights out defensively, Stark led the way with seven steals, part of a 24-steal effort by the team as a whole.

Defeating White Pine 2-0, Malley Jobin scored on an assist from Sophie Elburn, while Stankovic scored an unassisted goal.

Looking to stay atop the league standings, the Eagles will host Equipo Academy on Monday, followed by a road game at Pahrump Valley on Wednesday.

“It’s always good to stay toward the top of the league because it will matter toward playoffs,” Shelton said. “We are a tough team and I think that we deserve to be on top. Now we just have to do our best to maintain our positioning, which I know these girls will give it their all to do so.”

Cozy fall décor that works in the desert

That first day I feel a little fall chill, I always chuckle to myself thinking about the “sweata weatha” exchange between Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler from their SNL sketch. While much of the country is pulling on sweaters, downing pumpkin lattes, and decorating for fall, we’re still wearing flip-flops and kicking on the AC.
