Girls Golf
Returning their entire core from last season’s state qualifying team, the Lady Eagles golf program is primed to make another run at their first state championship since 2010.
Ending a four-year state tournament drought last season, Boulder City, behind junior Lani Potter, is the presumed preseason favorite to win the 3A Southern Region. This is aided by the departures of Faith Lutheran and Clark, the two programs that finished one-and-two ahead of the Eagles in last year’s final.
Ready to stake her claim as the league’s top golfer, Potter is back after a sophomore campaign in which she earned Sunrise Golfer of the Year following a state champion runner-up finish. Garnering six first place finishes last season for the Lady Eagles, Potter should once again be in the hunt for an individual title after a grueling summer of training.
“This summer I’ve worked a lot on my short game,” Potter said. “Been working on hitting shots from within a 100 yards, in order to get lower scores. I’ve also worked on my mental game quite a bit.”
Joining Potter will be sophomore Madisan Walker, who earned All-Southern Region second team honors last season, while seniors Lauryn Norris and Holly Piper, and sophomore Ryann Reese have returned following All-League selections last fall. Set to open their season up on Sept. 7 at The Palms, the Lady Eagles will square off in a Sunrise match against Chaparral, Del Sol, Moapa Valley, Southeast Career Technical Academy and Virgin Valley.
Girls Volleyball
An injury-plagued weekend limited the Lady Eagles volleyball program to a 1-5 start in the 4A-laden Las Vegas Invitational. However, with Thursday’s home opener against 4A Basic on the way, head coach Cherise Hinman is optimistic that her program will bounce back.
“We had some injuries over the weekend that made it hard to fill out a line-up,” Hinman said. “Our girls were able to make adjustments though and made the most of the situation they were given. We’re getting back to strength though and are excited to play on our home court.”
Standouts from this past week’s tournament include the returning senior duo of Maggie Roe and Alea Lehr, while senior Cortney Blumenthal and junior Kenadee Bailey provided highlight plays as well, according to Hinman.
Putting an emphasis on receiving serves and net play this week in practice, Hinman is confident in the team’s ability to get back to their winning ways.
Cross-country
Both the girls and boys cross-country programs got off to a great start Tuesday, finishing in second place behind event host Tech.
Finishing with an overall team score of 59 points, the Lady Eagles led by junior runner Sierra Selinger trailed only the Roadrunners (26 points), while finishing ahead of Virgin Valley (66), Moapa Valley (92) and Laughlin (109).
Picking up from where she left off last season, Selinger placed first with an overall time of 24:51 on the 3.1 mile course.
Finishing not shortly behind was freshman Audrey Selinger who came in seventh place with a time of 26:56, while junior Lauren Stewart finished 13th with an overall time of 28:47 to give the Lady Eagles three top-15 finishers.
Rounding out Boulder City’s core were freshman Brynlee Campbell and Camille Torgesen who finished in 21st and 23rd place respectively.
For the boys, senior Tyler Campbell looks ready for another run at the individual state championship crown, placing third or the Eagles with a time of 25:54.
Finishing with an overall score of 76, the Eagles narrowly edged out Del Sol who finished with a team score of 77, larger because of the efforts of freshman Noah Calvert, who finished 14th.
Finishing not far behind, senior Braden Klouse placed 17th, while junior John Krausman placed 18th for the Eagles. Following Tuesday’s pair of second-place finishes, the Eagles will take their talents up a notch during the Labor Day weekend, traveling to Palo Verde on Saturday for a cross division meet.
