Elks’ annual hoop shoot attracts 23 boys and girls

Boulder City Elks Lodge held its annual hoop shoot Dec. 2 at the city’s Recreation Center. Twenty-three boys and girls competed in the free-throw contest.

Winners were: Jeremy Spencer, 8-9-year-old boys; Callie Torgesen, 10-11-year-old girls; Nicholas Muelrath, 10-11-year-old boys; and Spencer Torgesen, 12-13-year-old boys.

There were no competitors in the 8-9-year-old or 12-13-year-old girls categories.

Each category winner will advance to the Jan. 10 district competition, where they will vie for the chance to move up to the national event where as much as $60,000 in scholarships will be awarded.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 7 served as ball retrieves for the competition.

Pickleball leagues to host Dec. 27 clinics, open house

Local pickleball leagues will hold a free clinic and introduction to the sport from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 27 at Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Drive, Henderson. Paddles and balls will be provided.

The sport is geared for players of all ages. It combines elements of tennis, pingpong and badminton.

Festivities will begin at noon with an exhibition match and potluck lunch. Clinics will begin at 12:30 p.m. The will include instruction for beginners and game strategies. Additionally, there will be doubles play and an expert challenge court.

Those attending are encouraged to bring snacks to share.
