Lara leads BC team with record-breaking time

The 2015 Nevada State Short Course swim championship concluded this past weekend at Heritage Park Aquatics Complex in Henderson, with multiple locals having standout performances over the four-day event.

“This year’s event was certainly a success for not only our Boulder City competitors, but all swimmers in general,” swim meet director Kyle Ottmann said. “Everything ran smoothly and everyone was able to compete in their participating events. We had a great finish this year with multiple times from years past shattered in the process.”

For the Boulder City Henderson Heatwave, Nick Lara took first place in the boys 15 and over 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:04.65, shattering his previous seed time of 4:15.62 coming into the event, while placing second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:56.19. Lara also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries with a time of 1:46.87 and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries with a time of 1:58.83.

Lara would later finish second in the 200-yard freestyle finals improving his time to 1:43.23, while improving his 200-yard backstroke time to 1:54.70 for a second-place finish in the finals as well.

Mason Romantic also placed well for the Heatwave, finishing seventh in 100-yard breaststroke preliminaries with a time of 1:08.42, before finishing fifth in the finals with a time of 1:08.21 for his 13-14 age bracket.

In the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries, Romantic placed fourth with a time of 2:28.83, before finishing in fifth place with a time of 2:30.58 in the finals.

“Both of our kids did a really nice job of improving their time over the weekend,” Heatwave head coach Mike Polk said. “Top to bottom our entire team had a nice showing and worked really hard to place high.”

For the Desert Storm, girls 15-over competitor Montana Lloyd had a nice showing overall. In the 400-yard individual medley, Lloyd finished fifth with a time of 4:28.67, while she took first place in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries with a time of 2:00.80 and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley preliminaries with a time of 2:10.18 and in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.66.

In the finals, Lloyd, a Boulder City High School student, finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.20, while she finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.63 and sixth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.32.

Joining Lloyd in the 15-over age bracket for the Storm was Abby Sauerbrei, who finished seventh in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:35.48. In the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries, Sauerbrei finished fifth with a time of 2:05.74, while she finished third in the 200-yard butterfly preliminaries with a time of 2:08.89.

Sauerbrei would later finish fifth in the 200-yard backstroke finals with a time of 2:06.90 and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly finals with a time of 2:09.40.

Rounding out the Boulder City Henderson Heatwave’s group of Boulder City competitors was 11-12 bracket swimmer Joseph Purdy, who finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:29.41.

Purdy also finished fifth in both the 200-yard freestyle and 50-yard breaststroke preliminiaries, before finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle finals with a time of 2:04.08 and fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke finals with a time of 34.10.
